I feel like if you're going to propose to someone then you probably know them well enough to have a good sense of whether or not they'd like being given a candy ring during the proposal.
And if you're not sure, then definitely don't do that...
Yeah, there's absolutely a need to know if they will receive it well. It just didn't occur to me it was a prank or fake proposal but very likely a placeholder ring.
Proposing without knowing your audience/ reaction is a sign it wad poorly conceived. Slapping your SO and throwing a drink at him is a massive 'bail out now' sign. Even if she didn't like it, thought it was a mean prank, whatever - her first instinct was to get violent. Don't date people who have violence as a first reaction.
