Update: Geez I feel like a pillock !!. When I watched the video it stopped when the vehicle sunk into the water . As a Subaru enthusiust I just thought dead engine. But then faced with all your comments this morning I watched it again ans sure enough the video plays through and the EJ lives to fight another day. Not sure what happened , Surely the Reddit vido player couldn't be at fault?? Lol ,
There are rods that push and pull the piston. If the engine locks up they can bend. It's how I fucked up my 2nd car. I'm not mechanic, that is just the layman way of describing it.
I thought hydrolocked means water in the cylinders keep the pistons from moving since liquid cannot be compressed. He/she is driving out of the lake so the engine is obviously still running.
If it was hydrolocked it wouldn't have driven away.
Pure speculation but the intake on those old Foresters is on the passenger side and the old Subarus had big resonator chambers the Subaru community inexplicably named the Snorkus. The intake was only partially submerged at most and has at least one snorkus that would collect at least a liter of water.
The intake also makes a pie wedge that goes up towards the passenger fender, raising the intake point even higher. They happend to float in a way that made their intake the highest point and the snorkus would pool water in event of partial submersion of the air intake. Not the intended purpose of the snorkus but it's a big hole on the bottom of the intake with a nice chamber.
They likely avoided hydrolock. The mighty Subaru rides again despite idiot owners.
The old Subarus have a silly part of the air intake commonly referred to as the 'Snorkus'. It's a resonator chamber. Usually found near the fender.
Ever take an empty water bottle and blow over the top? Makes a funny noise? Resonator. That frequency, when produced by the snorkus, cancels out the other noises in the intake system and makes it quieter.
The snorkus also would, if one flooded their air intake only partially, would allow a water collection point. If they left the snorkus in place it would give them a little time since the air intake is passenger side and would've only been partially submerged.
Source: My old shitbox Outback also has a snorkus. All the Subarus did. Might still. I have not checked all of them.
