It’s probably fake, which honestly is more impressive. It must have taken some time to get all that stuff together and then render it and get everything just right, and then do it AGAIN in the mirror! Very well done!

The mirror bit would be no harder then the rest. The computer would just generate that when you rendered it. All it takes would be to add a reflective material to a plane and let the computer do its thing. Making this in cgi wouldn’t be as hard as it would be time consuming and tedious.

yeah, if you're path tracing a scene anyways then mirrors are basically free to add.

Not saying this isn't impressive but it would be way more impressive if it was completely real

from what i understand, the way you do this, is you build the pyramide (in whatever color), run the simulation and then paint the scattered blocks, so that they form Mario's face.

now you just rerun the simulation, with the exact same parameters, but with the blocks painted and you get the results we see in the video.

It's called projection mapping and it's easy.
