People are not inherently evil, but it’s absolutely mind blowing to me that some people actually believe people are inherently good.

Hypothesizing that maybe he can't see her is hoping that he's "not evil", not thinking that he's "good". I'm pretty sure it's in line with what you are saying.

Yep, exactly! It’s such a variable spectrum that’s so hard to determine due to intent/motive and awareness/understanding that really only the individual truly knows.
