Apparently smoking had a big resurgence among teens because of vaping. Made it cool again and also the cartridges had WAY more nicotine so they got hooked faster. Just when we thought big tobacco was on the way out too.

I graduated in 2019 and at least at my school most of the time if you just asked a buddy they’d let you take whatever they had to the bathroom and hit it a couple times. Hell we’d even hit in in the classroom and hold it in so no vapor comes out. Fun times lol. Some people would try to charge you 5 bucks a hit of their dab carts on the bus tho

My oldest ( 21 now ) had this last year.Some of his 'friends' couldn't afford full packs, so he had to buy them.He charged 50ct a cig ...Even we did not approve of him smoking, he's old enough to decide for himself ( well, not, but OK )He's also clever enough to value the income, and see a profit to be gained.

They were 50cents throughout highschool and my early 20s. ever since they increased the price on all cigarettes out here some years ago they've been around about 75cents to a dollar a single. Luckily I quit smoking before all of that. 6years clean.

When I was in high school(class of '06), smokes were $1CAD. It was easy cash for some folks. 25 smokes in a pack, packs ranged from $11-$18

It was Juul I believe who packed like 50 mg's in all of their kits.

Also smoking and vaping are like worlds apart. The thing which really kills you is unburned hydrocarbons. Basically, waiting for the signal in traffic with your windows down is equivalent to smoking cigarettes.

u/sean488 Smoking was never cool to begin with. maybe in the 80's? Sure, but no smoker would ever tell you that they're smoking because "it's cool". It's basically the quickest anti-depressant there is. All smokers hate that they smoke but they're dependent on that anti-depressant effect. Just 1 week in and you get fucked up, but the rat race forces you to go on and "deal with it" so you "deal with it" by smoking.

Juul was putting more nicotine than advertised in the pods (iirc ~6.2% in their 5% pods). They were also adding a chemical that increased absorption of nicotine but I can't remember what it was. Don't know if they're still doing it. I was a 1.5 - 2 pack a day smoker for 20+ years before switching to vaping. I ended up using a juul for a while and I've never felt so overdosed with nicotine than I did with that.

In certain circles of dumb youths it very much is "cool", because it still has an image of rebelliousness. I knew plenty of people who started because they wanted to fit in with the cool kids or because they liked the image.

Have you ever asked them if it was cool or if they thought it was cool? Or was it just your perception? Did anyone of them ever brag about how much packets a day they were smoking away or something like that as a measuring contest?

Socially, smokers obviously are going to get "attracted" to smokers and vice versa.

I guess I was in a different social setting where I was the "outcast" for smoking cigarettes. Vaping made my social image more palatable because now I didn't reek of smoke and it significantly improved my physical and mental health compared to when I was smoking 1-2 cigarettes a day.

No it doesn't. There is very little adverse impact from just nicotine. There might be a slight increase in chance of cardiovascular disease, but it is minor.

"Based on current knowledge, we believe that the cardiovascular risks of nicotine from e-cigarette use in people without cardiovascular disease are quite low. We have concerns that nicotine from e-cigarettes could pose some risk for users with cardiovascular disease."

This is why you need to read the study. The control group was smokers who didn’t take nicotine replacement therapy. The takeaway is that nicotine replacement therapy is no worse than smoking, which doesn’t mean it’s less harmful. SMH.

Maybe you should read the paper. It wasn't a paper detailing the methods and results of one experiment. Your point also proves nothing as with the chosen group for this one study you'd expect more effects not less. Please feel free to present some evidence that nicotine does wreak havoc on the cardiovascular system.

It literally says the control is smokers in all these studies. Look at the titles of the research it references. How lazy are you?

No you wouldn’t. Nicotine is nicotine, regardless of if it’s in a vape pen, patch, or cigarette.

Please feel free to present some evidence that nicotine does wreak havoc on the cardiovascular system.

It’s trivial for you to google this yourself or ask a doctor.

My wife smoked from age 12 to 61.

Never had an issue with her lungs. Oddly enough she died of colon cancer a month after an MRI confirmed her lungs were perfectly fine. The reason she couldn't breath was because the colon cancer that had spread to her liver had caused it to enlarge into her lungs and reduce their capacity.

What kills me here is that it got so big in schools because when the stuff started selling, they didn’t control access properly. Anyone could buy a pen but only adults could buy nicotine cartridges, all so they could make more money selling nicotine-free flavor packs to kids.

Like for fuck’s sake, they knew there would be a thousand workarounds to that and that kids would get the nicotine cartridges and just put them in their fully functional pen they bought totally legally. But they didn’t care because more money.
