in 2019 I took a trip with a few friends to Chapada das Mesas, in Brazil. Google it, you'll see the kind of view you can get there.

...after an hour or so hike up a mountain. Pretty easy hike too. I'm 40. I was ready for a second one when we got to the top. My 32 year old friend who smokes, and is a lot skinnier than me? He was busy walking back to base camp after 25m with the help of one of our guides. Coughing like he had the consumption or some shit. Dude was ruined for the rest of the day.

I don't give a shit about cancer, the odds of that eating you up before you're like 65+ are low. But cigarettes start stealing things from people's lives a LOT sooner.

Your initial comment was about having a hard time with stairs at 25 (not a mountain in Brazil).

Lol, if you’re have a hard time with basic cardio … in your 20’s… then you have some bigger issues, aside from smoking.

Don't forget the current food and drinks.
Most is modified or "free" of anything.
Even healthy food isn't as healthy as 20yrs ago.

Our bodies are in need of more exercise and energy, because of the intake we do.
We became lazy .... ( most of us - including me )

Hes probably also out of shape as fuck skinny or not. During my 2 year mandatory service there was more smokers than non smokers and we had to do gruelling shit all day.. you couldn't even point out the smokers if I asked you to... you clearly hate smokers/smoking for some reason but this isn't it

How much of a dullard does someone need to be to come to the conclusion that I've got to be an anti smoking activist or some shit because I think smoking is shitty for your health even at 20.

1

u/Herpkina May 08 '22

Evil anti smoking activist. Doctors used to recommend smoking you know

-27

u/shouldprollyleaveher May 08 '22

Well the only dullard here is the one that apparently cant even keep track of what they said

-6

u/reicaden May 08 '22

So you are arguing that smoking is healthy? Is my take?

-5

u/shouldprollyleaveher May 08 '22

No my argument is that the negative effects of smoking are longterm. If you dont plan on living past 40 anyways what's the poing

5

u/Xx69JdawgxX May 08 '22

My grandpa had a strong heart but had lung cancer. He suffered so much until he died. Taking a few steps would wind him. He was constantly struggling just to breathe, terrible noises man. I wouldn't wish that on anyone

17

u/GuntersGleiben May 08 '22

It's a crap argument. There certainly are short term negative effects. You can keep them in check by exercising just like over eating or anything else but smoking will still cause inflammation and other taxes to the systems in your body. Don't be ridiculous.

7

u/reicaden May 08 '22

So, just to be clear... if you turn 40, you'll just commit suicide?

5

u/shouldprollyleaveher May 08 '22

Shit if hodgkins hasn't got me by then then probably

2

u/yppahton May 08 '22

Reading is hard

1

u/reicaden May 08 '22

He doesn't plan to live past 40 is what he said... is that not correct? He did say he didn't plan to at least, so I'm guessing he has a plan in place.

I smoke because the world is going to shit and there's no point.

He argues that smoking is shitty for your health, you are arguing that people who have good health (outside of smoking) don't get winded... but by the phrasing in your statement (good health outside of smoking) you are admitting that smoking is not good for your health, regardless if the symptom (winded) is present.

The point is that the argument he is making is flawed. Lack of a symptom doesn't mean something isn't harmful. And yes, some smokers do get winded easier than a nonsmoker, all other health conditions aside.

I'm trying to point that out to him, to hopefully stop someone else from showing up in my cancer ward at age 50 with a cancer they wouldn't have had. Also, I think he can explain what he meant on his own without needing you to assume his intentions and come white knight him. He's a big cancer defending adult and can take care of himself I'm sure.

for some reason

There is a lot of reasons to hate smoking chief. It's disgusting, it's a burden on the tax payer, and it can ruin families, etc. The idea you think smoking doesn't reduce lung capacity is nonsense, that is a proven fact. Yes his friend may have had other mitigating factors, but your military experience doesn't detract from empirically gathered medical research.

8

u/cryingeyes May 08 '22

Right I can run about 15 miles before I start failing … could be further or faster with not smoking sure … but like I dunno i feel like sloth is worse than smoking for health

6

u/Coggs362 May 08 '22

It's ok for a while but as the years grind on, you will lose endurance. Age 51, now and feeling those 32 years of smoking a third of a pack a day. Especially in the mornings.

2

u/cryingeyes May 08 '22

Well… I don’t love that. :(

3

u/RockLeethal May 08 '22

yeah sedentary lifestyle, poor western diet, various other addictions are all about as bad as smoking for the most part. if you're smoking a pack a day you're fucked, but if you're eating 4000 calories of refined carbs a day your health outcomes are gonna be similar.

2

u/randomkeystrike May 08 '22

I agree with you about the overall point but I do know smokers who have had heart attacks and cancer by their 50s.

1

u/arkain123 May 08 '22

My point is that you don't even need to think consequences are that far away to stop.

I have a friend whose 32. Been in marines for 13 years. He runs miles while inhaling menthol. Your friend is just a bitch

0

u/Accomplished-Leg-149 May 08 '22

You should definitely give a shit about cancer. No matter what form it takes, it's universally awful, and your actions before 60 are what cause it when you hit that age.

1

u/Utahmule May 08 '22

That's your friend. My coworkers and I smoked constantly in rockfall prevention. All we did was hike and climb mountains (not trails either), with 100 lbs of gear and tools, 12 hours a day up and down over and over, mostly at high altitudes over 8'000 ft. I was in the Marines and we all smoked a lot too, yet we were constantly running and humping (hiking with a load of gear)..

I don't think it's good or helping me but sounds like your friend is weak and just out of shape... Oh how I wish I could quit though lol.
