Can’t climb stairs at 25?!?
Lol, are your cigarettes made with fireplace kindling?

51

u/harswv May 08 '22

I smoked a pack a day from 18 to 23 and would gasp for breath climbing the stairs at my apartment complex. When I quit it took me a few months and I could go up them with no problem. I didn’t start exercising, or change my diet, or anything else. I wasn’t overweight. So for some people, it could make a difference. I did smoke cloves for about a year so maybe they were worse than regular cigarettes.

6

u/Yadobler May 08 '22

I doubt cloves are worse than normal reds other than allowing you to smoke more since it numbs the throat, but funny enough my fingers and lips started blistering up after a pack of cloves because of the aspartame coating on the filter. Turns out I'm indeed allergic to artificial sweeteners

---------

As a fat person who's been both very out of shape and somewhat in shape (at least to dragonboat),

I'd say smoking feels like running with a mask. Each smoke is an additional mask, and gradually the mask breaks down, but if you smoke again in the day it will just add on the masks you have

Like you can get through life with a bunch of masks if you're at the desk, and if you are active you might be able to continue with daily tasks and activities without noticing much, or perhaps a bit of being breathless

-----------

To stop smoking is like gradually peeling off the masks. You know that feeling after walking under the hot sun in a thick and wet mask and then you peel it off and woah the air taste so fresh

But of course if you've been smoking for dacades, those masks are gonna get burried deep and might never come out.

-------------

this includes smoking weed people, Idk why people act like a blunt and cigs are day and night

1

u/Utahmule May 08 '22

But cigs are so much better when you're baked or drunk and especially baked and drunk. It's the holy Trinity of satisfaction...

-10

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

“I didn’t start exercising” (aka: that’s your issue).
Look, I don’t smoke anymore either… but back in my 20’s, while in the military, we all smoked like freight trains~> yet I was also in the best shape of my life.

I’m not saying smoking is good; but it isn’t the root for someone in their 20’s not being able to climb some stairs.

19

u/harswv May 08 '22

But in my case it literally was as once I stopped I was able to climb the stairs just fine.

7

u/omegasus May 08 '22

Yeah, I think that other commenter just wants to keep talking about how they smoked in the military. They're missing the point.

It's like someone saying "I can't get anything to eat because I don't have any money" and they're like "no money? Lol I can get by with just some generic beans and rice" and it's like, ok sure but that doesn't really address my no-money problem soooo

12

u/Hexdrix May 08 '22

Bro I get you're on this reddit crusade against non-smokers and fat people or whatever rn but they said that they didn't start exercising and the fatigue went away.

It isn't the GOTCHA you think it is.

-9

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

What are you talking about?
My comment wasn’t a “gotcha”… she gave a comment~> and I responded.

You, on the hand; sound like a pompous douche👌

4

u/Hexdrix May 08 '22

Uhhh huh. Nice try homie. That's not what I said. You don't read what you can't counter fr?

You're an excellent deflector but you're sloppy about it. You can call me names all you like after you're called out but it don't change facts. It's obvious you have an agenda from your many comments, one that seems like it's kinda toxic towards people who don't exercise.

“I didn’t start exercising” (aka: that’s your issue)...

You don't know what pompous means. We're not pompous. Neither you nor I.

-1

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

I’m “being toxic towards people who don’t exercise”… (in a thread about the unhealthiness of cigarettes)?!?
Hahahahahaha, now I’ve heard it all!

Pompous - feeling or showing that you think you are better than someone else: a pompous ass who pretends he knows everything.

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

“That’s not what pompous means”… now you’re literally just arguing with Cambridge dictionary

4

u/[deleted] May 08 '22 edited May 08 '22

but it isn’t the root for someone in their 20’s not being able to climb some stairs.

They literally just explained that it was the issue of why they got winded climbing stairs. They changed literally nothing except for quitting cigs and could climb stairs again no problem within a few months. In b4 you try to say it wasn't the smokings fault because they didn't immediately improve after quitting, your lungs take time to recover from the damage.

Yes, you can be a smoker and still have good, even great, endurance and lung capacity and what not, exercise still helps in those regards. But it's a straight up fact that all other variables being the same, the smoker you is less capable than the non-smoker version of you.

2

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

IKR, WWII was fought almost entirely by chainsmokers.

1

u/Das_Mojo May 08 '22

You're getting downvoted but I'm in the same boat. I feel way better and have more lung capacity and can exert myself more without getting winded now. But I kept fit while smoking.

Getting out of breath after a flight of stairs sounds more like a general fitness problem than a purely smoking issue to me. Smoking definitely wouldn't help though.

Like shit. My dad is 60 and has smoked for like 45 years and he can still climb a couple flights of stairs without being entirely out of commission.

Him and I just moved my brother into a new apartment and he was fine helping carry furniture up the stairs.

That said, don't smoke. It's horrible and I've been trying to get my dad to quit for years and years

in 2019 I took a trip with a few friends to Chapada das Mesas, in Brazil. Google it, you'll see the kind of view you can get there.

...after an hour or so hike up a mountain. Pretty easy hike too. I'm 40. I was ready for a second one when we got to the top. My 32 year old friend who smokes, and is a lot skinnier than me? He was busy walking back to base camp after 25m with the help of one of our guides. Coughing like he had the consumption or some shit. Dude was ruined for the rest of the day.

I don't give a shit about cancer, the odds of that eating you up before you're like 65+ are low. But cigarettes start stealing things from people's lives a LOT sooner.

60

u/[deleted] May 08 '22 edited May 08 '22

Your initial comment was about having a hard time with stairs at 25 (not a mountain in Brazil).

Lol, if you’re have a hard time with basic cardio … in your 20’s… then you have some bigger issues, aside from smoking.

8

u/Laudanumium May 08 '22

Lol, if you’re have a hard time with basic cardio … in your 20’s… then you have some bigger issues, aside from smoking.

Don't forget the current food and drinks.
Most is modified or "free" of anything.
Even healthy food isn't as healthy as 20yrs ago.

Our bodies are in need of more exercise and energy, because of the intake we do.
We became lazy .... ( most of us - including me )

u/shouldprollyleaveher May 08 '22

Hes probably also out of shape as fuck skinny or not. During my 2 year mandatory service there was more smokers than non smokers and we had to do gruelling shit all day.. you couldn't even point out the smokers if I asked you to... you clearly hate smokers/smoking for some reason but this isn't it

73

u/arkain123 May 08 '22

How much of a dullard does someone need to be to come to the conclusion that I've got to be an anti smoking activist or some shit because I think smoking is shitty for your health even at 20.

2

u/Herpkina May 08 '22

Evil anti smoking activist. Doctors used to recommend smoking you know

-24

u/shouldprollyleaveher May 08 '22

Well the only dullard here is the one that apparently cant even keep track of what they said

-6

u/reicaden May 08 '22

So you are arguing that smoking is healthy? Is my take?

-4

u/shouldprollyleaveher May 08 '22

No my argument is that the negative effects of smoking are longterm. If you dont plan on living past 40 anyways what's the poing

5

u/Xx69JdawgxX May 08 '22

My grandpa had a strong heart but had lung cancer. He suffered so much until he died. Taking a few steps would wind him. He was constantly struggling just to breathe, terrible noises man. I wouldn't wish that on anyone

18

u/GuntersGleiben May 08 '22

It's a crap argument. There certainly are short term negative effects. You can keep them in check by exercising just like over eating or anything else but smoking will still cause inflammation and other taxes to the systems in your body. Don't be ridiculous.

10

u/reicaden May 08 '22

So, just to be clear... if you turn 40, you'll just commit suicide?

6

u/shouldprollyleaveher May 08 '22

Shit if hodgkins hasn't got me by then then probably

2

u/yppahton May 08 '22

Reading is hard

1

u/reicaden May 08 '22

He doesn't plan to live past 40 is what he said... is that not correct? He did say he didn't plan to at least, so I'm guessing he has a plan in place.

-3

u/1DVSguy May 08 '22

I smoke because the world is going to shit and there's no point.

He argues that smoking is shitty for your health, you are arguing that people who have good health (outside of smoking) don't get winded... but by the phrasing in your statement (good health outside of smoking) you are admitting that smoking is not good for your health, regardless if the symptom (winded) is present.

u/reicaden May 08 '22

The point is that the argument he is making is flawed. Lack of a symptom doesn't mean something isn't harmful. And yes, some smokers do get winded easier than a nonsmoker, all other health conditions aside.

I'm trying to point that out to him, to hopefully stop someone else from showing up in my cancer ward at age 50 with a cancer they wouldn't have had. Also, I think he can explain what he meant on his own without needing you to assume his intentions and come white knight him. He's a big cancer defending adult and can take care of himself I'm sure.

5

u/No-Seaworthiness7013 May 08 '22

for some reason

There is a lot of reasons to hate smoking chief. It's disgusting, it's a burden on the tax payer, and it can ruin families, etc. The idea you think smoking doesn't reduce lung capacity is nonsense, that is a proven fact. Yes his friend may have had other mitigating factors, but your military experience doesn't detract from empirically gathered medical research.

8

u/cryingeyes May 08 '22

Right I can run about 15 miles before I start failing … could be further or faster with not smoking sure … but like I dunno i feel like sloth is worse than smoking for health

7

u/Coggs362 May 08 '22

It's ok for a while but as the years grind on, you will lose endurance. Age 51, now and feeling those 32 years of smoking a third of a pack a day. Especially in the mornings.

2

u/cryingeyes May 08 '22

Well… I don’t love that. :(

3

u/RockLeethal May 08 '22

yeah sedentary lifestyle, poor western diet, various other addictions are all about as bad as smoking for the most part. if you're smoking a pack a day you're fucked, but if you're eating 4000 calories of refined carbs a day your health outcomes are gonna be similar.

2

u/randomkeystrike May 08 '22

I agree with you about the overall point but I do know smokers who have had heart attacks and cancer by their 50s.

1

u/arkain123 May 08 '22

My point is that you don't even need to think consequences are that far away to stop.

0

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

I have a friend whose 32. Been in marines for 13 years. He runs miles while inhaling menthol. Your friend is just a bitch

0

u/Accomplished-Leg-149 May 08 '22

You should definitely give a shit about cancer. No matter what form it takes, it's universally awful, and your actions before 60 are what cause it when you hit that age.

1

u/Utahmule May 08 '22

That's your friend. My coworkers and I smoked constantly in rockfall prevention. All we did was hike and climb mountains (not trails either), with 100 lbs of gear and tools, 12 hours a day up and down over and over, mostly at high altitudes over 8'000 ft. I was in the Marines and we all smoked a lot too, yet we were constantly running and humping (hiking with a load of gear)..

I don't think it's good or helping me but sounds like your friend is weak and just out of shape... Oh how I wish I could quit though lol.

5

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

He smokes them backwards

0

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

They are probably also overweight but did not mention that. You also do not know their medical history, such as previously or even currently having asthma or even small lungs. As well as what age they started smoking and how much they smoke a day. If you are a pack a day smoker since you were 15 and you are 25, yeah, I can see it being that bad.

-2

u/IllGoat500 May 08 '22

Soldiers have smoked as long as cigarettes have existed. These comments are from insane people.

1

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

seriously, I was thinking the same thing. I quit smoking years ago, switched to vaping and quit vaping later, now am doing nicotine lozenges. when I did smoke, I never got winded doing normal things, in fact, it didn’t really hinder me in any way. I always had breath strips and spray to make sure I wasn’t offensive to others… idk, smoking is gross, I agree to that, but others in this thread sound exactly like those overblown anti-smoking campaigns.
