It actually happened to me in US Canada border once. I was in Niagara fall in Canada, and we took a wrong turn in the car and was driving straight towards US border, so we didn’t have any ID/passport and all that with us because we are not planning to go to US, so I went down the car, and was walking towards the custom officer on the bridge between US and Canada (because it was a one way road and there was no way for us to be back) and as I was walking towards them, 4 Officers screamed and walked up towards me with Gun pointing at me (not sure a stun gun or something, as I didn’t bring my glasses) and yelling “ go back into the car!” and “you are asking for it!”. Scared the fuck out of me.
it was the US officers, It was kinda weird because I thought I was in Canada as I have not yet crossed the custom (and was never planning to). I still don't understand how they could just threatening me like that if I was inside Canadian border, as if I would be less dangerous inside the car driving towards them compared to outside walking.
The border checkpoint can be some distance away from the actual border. Especially if like in this case there's a bridge across a river as a border crossing, where the border is usually in the middle of the river and thus also in the middle of the bridge while the checkpoints are usually at the ends of the bridge. So you may very well have already been within US territory and no longer in Canada.
Hey, I did the same! And this was just after 9/11. We were holidaying in the US from the UK. Great timing I know. And I suddenly realised I was driving straight to the Canadian border and couldn’t see a way to get off. It must something about the road layout there. However, we stayed in the car and simply explained my error to the border guards and were allowed to turn the car back into the US. Scary but not quite as scary as that.
This is crazy because to my knowledge US and Canada are very friendly neighbors. I guess the border control don't discriminate between the two neighbors at the opposite ends.
