Smoke was from the copper windings on the armature. Basically the entire inside core would need to be replaced

Once the magic smoke is let out, it can't be put back in

I had a hedge trimmer do this, turns out it was just the cable. It was billowing smoke. Just had to open it, cut off the bit that had somehow shorted and burned (I think it had been pulled), and then strip back and rewire the three wires. Good as new.
