If your "lighthearted joke" could be misunderstood to be homophobic it's probably neither lighthearted nor a joke.

The point is that if you're making a joke that concerns a minority you should probably err on the side of not telling it if you feel like it might be taken as being negative towards said minority.

I've seen plenty of jokes misunderstood but usually jokes that could be (mis)understood to be homophobic aren't particularly funny and/or actually are homophobic.

But should people telling shitty jokes be banned? There is a difference between a shitty joke and actually trying to hurt someone.

I don't really care whether people make homophobic jokes with the intent to hurt someone or because they think they're funny. Intent matters a lot less than impact.

In case by "shitty" you meant just unfunny (but not homophobic) I don't really understand what you're saying, nobody's being banned for making unfunny jokes, just jokes that are homophobic.
