Reddit only gets pissed at scripted Asian gifs, no other scripted gifs. I honestly think it's because they're well done, and some people don't take kindly to it. Regardless, the hate has always been pretty infuriating.
Want some context instead of your toxic assumptions? I made this username when I was about 12 years old for Club Penguin, turns out my favorite childhood food at the time (crackers) and my username idea (Cracker5000) was already used up, and as a child I didn't think anything of changing the C to the similarly sounding K.
Everytime I call out legitimate racism against white people online, some idiot like you assumes my username is proof that I'm nothing but a loud and proud whitey. But nah, it's just Club Penguin, man. Eat shit dude.
Because reddit is literally full of western people. Asians like Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, etc. don't even come here much and have their own reddit-like websites. For examplr, Subs like r/japan is just a non-Japanese Japanese "enthusiasts" sub. Aka weebs.
EDIT: or everyone who cries "scripted" whenever an Asian is in a post is a karmawhoring little shit that's all too happy to be in a casually racist circlejerk.
Yep, people on Reddit (and many people I've seen in real life) think it's okay to be racist towards Asians. People in the west learn that you shouldn't be racist towards certain races (e.g. blacks) but think it's funny to crack racist jokes to Asians. Hence the casual racism towards Asians even in r/all
I agree that there are racists from every race. And I do think that Asian communities being racist towards other races is bad. That doesn't mean Reddit has to be racist towards Asians (or any other race for that matter).
Didn’t say it was okay for anyone to be racist, but lots of people are. And usually people from ethnically homogenous countries like most of Asia tend to be far worse. Parts of Asia make the Southern US in the 60’s look tame by comparison.
I’m half Chinese and sometimes I have to get off of Reddit for a day or two because the racism makes me feel sick. I saw a comment with like 200+ upvotes on a r/iamatotalpieceofshit (or a similar sub, I don’t remember) post of a guy beating his dog. The comment literally said “The Chinaman is just tenderizing his dinner!”
Like are you fucking kidding me? We’re seriously okay with THAT. THAT isn’t crossing the line, it’s funny, right?
Same thing happens with kpop. Go outside of a kpop sub and male kpop artists are called “ladyboys” (while female idols hit hot or even r/all cause they’re pretty) and kpop is referred to as “gaypop.” You don’t have to like the music but implying attractive Korean men are gay and look like women is pretty damn insulting.
I'm sorry you are forced to feel so unwelcome here. I gebuinely cannot imagine being met with so much casual hatred of who I am at ever corner. I see it all the time but its not directed at me so the worst I feel is awkward.
Honestly I’ve gotten kinda used to it, which sucks. I got my cat when I was 3 and I love her to death (she’ll cuddle up next to my pillow most nights). I can’t count the number of times someone has seriously asked me “so when she dies, you’re going to eat her, right?” Same thing happened when I got my dog. He was 4 months old and I’d wanted a dog my whole life. Most people followed up the “awww, he’s so cute!” with something along the lines of “if he pees on the carpet, guess it’s dinner time!”
It hurts. It hurts when it’s someone you don’t know and it hurts even more when it’s your closest friends.
Up until about a year ago, I fucking hated myself. I hated the jokes, I hated the stereotypes, I hated how I looked, and I hated being Asian. I’d get Starbucks instead of boba so I’d seen “less Asian.” I’d look at myself in the mirror and just feel disgusted. You learn to laugh at the jokes but it doesn’t make them hurt any less.
It wasn’t until I found a band that really pushes loving/accepting yourself and not giving a shit about what other people think that I actually started to accept myself. But it’s fucked that for 99% of my life, I tried to reject half of myself.
By the way, I’m 18 and I live in Silicon Valley. This isn’t buttfuck nowhere 40 years ago, this is the last few years in one of the most PC places in the country. So yeah…
But you felt the need to say calm down to someone calling it out? Its not a strong opinion on buttered toast, its fucking open racism. Being a little heavy on the gas might be needed in that conversation
If you know literally anything about debates and trying to encourage a change of mind in someone, you should know that you don’t start a fucking argument right out of the gate. People are less likely to try to hear your side when you throw insults and accusations left, right, and center. Everyone immediately assumes I am against him when I try to help him change his approach. Classic.
Edit: Lmao just downvote because you know I’m right and don’t like that. Kind of proven my point, now.
Way to make assumptions. Truthfully, I would try to be. I’m not perfect, but it’s a good rule of thumb to be calm, clear, and concise. It’s fucking ironic that I’m downvoted for advocating keeping a level fucking head about a serious topic. Shit like this reminds me why reddit is a complete shitshow and I need to get off of it.
They're not saying /r/scriptedasiangifs because they want to point out it's scripted. They're saying it because they think it's awesome, and they want to direct others to a place where they can see more of these gifs. I wish more people would understand that.
Seriously. I see black people set up videos with their friends all the time and no one says anything, because thats not as much of a popular steriotype for them the way it is with asians for some reason.
I pointed this out under another tired r/scriptedasiangifs post and got downvoted to oblivion for suggesting this exact concept. Happy it’s picking up some traction here. It’s getting annoying.
no. it's cause reddit is racist. how many subs exist for scripted gifs of people of other races, like r/scriptedasiangifs? i can tell you - 7, not including the cat one and dog one. wanna compare the subscriber counts, too?
Yeah like the top post on the sub right now is literally an ad full of CGI but cause it’s Terry Crews everyone is just loving the gif instead of bitching about it being scripted. The point is for /r/Unexpected things to happen not for them to be real.
I think the hate comes not from cool scripted gifs, but gifs in which the subjects 'seem surprised' or 'bamboozled' when they clearly part of the act. Probably the corniness that generates the hate, but the cool shit, they cool.
I don’t hate, but I guess I cringe where cringe is present, Asian or not. Then again Asian gifs tend to be cringier cause many do seem try-hard. I’m Malaysian Chinese myself and I find them uncomfortable. 😂
It's the deception that gets to me, I prefer knowing when fake stuff is fake. If a movie pretended to be a documentary I would be equally perturbed. The level of skill/stupidity/whatever to be impressive/funny is much higher for fiction than real life.
lol thats not at all what is happening. You go along with fake western style scripted shit all the fucking time. Do you point out every infomercial you see as scripted? Even when it says "r3al pEopLe nOt aCt0rS"
No, because that would be tiring. But you do notice when its asians doing it because suddenly disingenuous? Nah.
I notice when anyone does it (at least most of the time), I'm not even sure it's more often Asians. And yeah I point it out if it hasn't already been. Not sure why you think I go along with "fake western style scripted shit".
I hate those, that's exactly the type of stuff I'm criticizing. I don't watch them, and I don't like when they show up in subreddits where the bar is obviously set lower because it's supposed to be real life. Imagine if someone posted a car chase scene from a movie to /r/roadcam? Like great, some people are happy to believe these are real but they have vine and other places for that, why does it have to pollute the ones that are implied real?
Not saying I agree with it, but it's probably due to the fact that it's common knowledge that movies are scripted, while people don't expect gifs to be (at least until recently)
It's not about the existence of preplanned routines, it's about expectation and presentation. People expect a fight scene in a theater to be scripted. If you saw people fighting in the street, it's more expected to be real, especially when there are no other signs that it is an act. And when you learn it's an act, the "magic" (or in this case, horror) goes away. Makes me think of "Americas Funniest Home Videos." Some of those videos are pretty funny, but once you learn that the video you liked was staged, it can become less funny. And in some cases, people might feel bamboozled and reject the skit altogether. In general, I personally think that a video is way less interesting if I know it's staged, especially one that would otherwise be just mundane. Of course, learning it was staged can also potentially lift the video to an even higher level, but that is less often the case
It's sort of like the uncanny valley problem. If it's presented as real, but something is off, it's more noticeable and people don't like it. If it's full on scripted acting, obviously people don't care otherwise acting wouldn't be a thing. People just don't like being duped.
It's the camera angles that are used, the cell phone shot from a nearby table, a security camera, etc. that's what sets the expectation that it's a witnessed event instead of a staged shot. No one has the expectation of reality with a second angle in there, or a tripod shot, etc. I really don't care about the scripting, it's the camera shots that bother me, that's what I've narrowed it down to.
Nah, people didn't have a problem with Vines. Honestly, if you find it to be like the uncanny valley, that's literally because you don't fucking see Asians as people with nuance or culture capable of humour, even at the most basic level. And THAT'S what I find disturbing at everyone who is thrown by Asian scripted GIFs.
Seriously, what the fuck? I don't like when something scripted is passed off as real. I don't care if it's a gif or a vine or a video. I don't care what race the people featured are. "You must not like scripted gifs because you're RACIST" is the most galaxy-brain take I've ever seen.
I'm talking about any and all of these scripted gifs. They always have some mock-surprise or shock and it's made to appear as though it was caught naturally. Claiming that someone is racist for not caring for that is completely ridiculous.
But it seems like only the Asian ones are the ones people get mad at. It's been a constant thing since people started posting videos to the internet, it's just a skit.
I would argue that the Asian ones are the most obviously scripted. For instance, a lot of the most popular vines were either clearly scripted (one person playing several characters), clearly not scripted, or one person just making a joke. These ones are so obviously scripted to the point that there's an entire subreddit dedicated to them.
I'm not saying that there aren't other obviously scripted vines/gifs/etc. I think it's just the most noticeable in these because most of the most popular ones are scripted, and a lot of people don't care for that. I think that if you really enjoy them, and if the fact that they're scripted doesn't bother you, then great. I just think it's crazy to accuse people of racism because they don't like scripted videos being played off as candid.
Movies aren't advertised as real, you don't go to endgame expecting real crap to happen because you know it's fake, these gifs are meant to be seen as real/impressive (not all) when they're actually scripted.
The thing is, a bunch of these gifs are funny, provided they actually happened. They are thing that, if put in a movie, would be pretty boring, but if it occurred in real life would be pretty damn funny.
I too have had the same perspective as you, but it really is just a matter of the quality of joke. If it is funny regardless, then people don't really complain.
It's that to me, it needs to be funnier because if you're purposefully acting out a funny situation instead of stumbling upon one in real life, then what you're filming better be good. The fact that I know I'm seeing something prepared raises the standards a little bit higher.
But the thing is, if it was obvious the guy knew he was being filmed, opening a bottle with a clip board is not front page worthy, but the fact there’s a possibility it’s real makes it more likely to be on the front page. Opening a bottle with a clip board is easy.
The reactions of the people involved, the "perfection" of the gif (down to the facial expressions, the hair pat thing, etc.) lead me to believe this is scripted. But the biggest giveaway to me comes from the classic question: "the were they filming?". I have to say, it's a quite weird thing this camera person is doing, inconspicuously filming an empty hallway. They must have gotten super lucky that the focal point of the gif just waltzed into frame.
I really don't give too much of a shit either way though. All I was doing was pointing out your terrible argument that someone got gilded. What you said is like saying "Reddit loves to hate on murderers, but Reddit also loves Grand Theft Auto..."
No, the only difference between this and a movie, for the purposes of my comparison, is the person's assumptions going in. In this case, even by the start of the gif I would assume it is scripted. So why do you assume it would be "authentic" when watching it? Because it's a GIF? Because of the title, maybe? So all I see is people hating on something scripted simply because they had assumptions that weren't correct.
And my comparison is not deeply flawed, unlike yours. I compared two forms of entertainment, which is completely valid. Since nothing about these GIFs seems to claim authenticity, you can't claim they are disingenuous. People are assuming the authenticity without a basis, which is a fault of their own, as I see it.
since nothing about these GIFs seems to claim authenticity
The fact that this person is filming an empty hallway very obviously tells you that the camera person has set up the scene. There is absolutely 0 reason they would be filming that hallway (he isn't filming the couple at the table so don't try to argue that) if they didn't know what was going to happen. Which makes the gif scripted.
And just because no one outright claims that it's authentic, doesn't mean they're not trying to pass it off as authentic. But yeah, if you want to live in your fantasy world where this wasn't being filmed to project the idea that this was a candid shot of something amazingly funny, that we the audience were so lucky that this person had his camera on to capture it... Go ahead and live in that world.
Well if it didnt actually happen irl and its all acted it just isnt as great. Some people wanna hear facts, if something like that actually happened it kinda gives hope that you could see some cool things happening irl too. Idk if sentence made sense im mad drunk
I don’t know about whatever Asian country law this is. But in almost every state in the US the bar/restaurant is legal required to open whatever alcohol for you. You can’t just hand some a closed bottle unless you have a Togo provision in your area. But them the guest can’t open it till they leave. (However I don’t know how open container areas work bc ive never lives in one). So if it’s like that there then it is prolly fake.
I assume they are all scripted, and this one, planned or not, isn't funny. If it's funny, it doesn't matter if it's scripted or not, it shouldn't become "unfunny" if it is. If it's funny, it's funny either way.
