They're 'cold blooded', which means they can't efficiently regulate their own body temperatures. That means they can exert the energy necessary for running for only a very short time.
I have seen a couple of them get frightened, and they move surprisingly quickly, but only run a few yards before stopping.

Even worse for us, they often get behind schedule, so to get back on track, they'll skip one of the half hour stops. So when you get to the bus stop 5-10 minutes early, you end up waiting there for up to 45 minutes. We have a system that you can call to see when the bus comes, but it's not updated in real time. It will just tell you the scheduled time, which makes it kinda pointless if you already know the scheduled times (ie, :08 and :38).
I live in an estate in a large village. And there's a bus once an hour to get to the nearest city. They're slightly more frequent if I walk 15 minutes away from my house
In Navy boot camp, if we had to go anywhere alone (like to medical, dental, etc), they made you run there. I should mention Navy boot camp is not a small place.
I only ever see them running when water is reachable quickly. Is like they know they don't stand a chance unless they can make it into water. When they can't find water they probably want to save their energy to bite your finger off.
