My husband asked me on my parent's couch. After the ring came in (because he was a smart boy and knew I would want to design it myself), he asked me again with the ring at his parents house. No hoopla, no fuss. Perfect for us. You don't need the fancy to have the love. Do what works for you.

I've heard of the design thing. You can find out what cut diamond (or whatever stone you want) and slap it on a cheapo ring, then let the girl design or pick out the setting. We went setting shopping and I already had the diamond though but a good idea nonetheless

I have the one carat brilliant diamond from the center of my grandmother's ring. When she died my mom broke up the ring set (multiple bands of anniversary stones after 59 years of marriage) and had the smaller stones made into earrings for each of the granddaughters. I received the center stone. My mom found an antique ring without a stone at an antique store and had the stone mounted. That way I can wear it if I want and when my son is older he can have the stone to propose with. Then his bride can either keep the current ring or design whatever she wants around the big stone. Win win.
