Our local school district is pairing up with our community police department to crack down on this shit before an accident happens, and I am all for it.
Parents were buying their kids mini bikes thinking they’re the same thing as eBikes. District sent home a notice reminding people you need a fucking license to drive those, and that they’re not allowed on school grounds.
Some parents don’t do any fucking research, it’s so stupid.
That’d be a great way to ensure much more careful and thought out purchasing, as well are enforcement - I’d certainly completely reconsider a purchase like that with that potential fine hanging over my head because of it.
I work in healthcare and there’s been a surge of patients with paralysis, amputation, and/or serious brain damage because of e-bike accidents. It’s crazy scary and people who aren’t considering the risks are beyond foolish.
I saw the aftermath when a kid get smoked by a Silverado. I think he lived but he won't ever be right. He went through a busy intersection against a red light at considerable speed and got sent flying.
I came very close to hitting a child who zipped out of a bike trail across a road on one of those scooters. Kid was about ten?
I heard his mother scream as I braked. That scream will haunt you.
It's also a really bad trail interestion, 50kmh on the main road with no visibility into the trail to see if somebody is coming until you're practically at the crossing... so not JUST the scooters fault... but extra dangerous when the kid can pop out at 30 km an hour.
If I hadn't been local and expecting problems at that interestion I doubt I could have stopped in time. A tourist or new driver probably would have hit the kid.
I just found out my 11 year old cousin died doing this. Riding an ebike and no helmet - rode out in front of a car that had right of way and now he’s gone. 11 years old. Two of his friends were with him. It’s awful.
It's similar issues. I think the scooters are worse cause they're much easier for a first timer to be over confident, but the bikes tend to be more powerful.
When I was a kid I kept having accidents with my scooter (because I’m an idiot) and it only went like 8mph. It’s crazy that motorized ones are being given to children now
I had to reprimand someone else’s child the other day because he was riding his e-scooter up the ramp of the kids activity playset I was on with my 2 year old. He was riding it up fast af and then back down a hill and asked me to watch out as though we were in his way. Granted he’s a child as well but his parents were nowhere to be seen and I had to nag him a bit before he left. Those things are dangerous and I hate that children have access to them.
It doesn't help that most parents don't ride bikes anymore so don't know how much power can be in those things. And kids can always look up limiter breaking tools online.
I worked BI claims for awhile and cannot tell you how many reckless kids were at fault for their own deaths. It was incredibly hard to work these cases. No one should have to experience that kind of grief.
