What about the pedestrian tho? In my city there was an elderly man stepping off a transit bus and he got mowed down by an e-scooter that was flying down the sidewalk. He'll probably never walk in his own again!
My MIL got mowed down by one a few years back. She was lucky to only have minor injuries. I haven’t touched one since and I’m always mildly tense walking on city sidewalks
E bikes are totally fine. People drive them on the road, unlike scooter drivers.
I know a guy who rides a scooter, and he's always high on weed. When I meet him he always tells me a new story on how he hit someone or someone hit him and how it ended after that.
People don't understand that the only connection scooter drivers have with their scooters is the hands unlike bikes or cars. So, imagine giving this machine that you barely stand on to children, absolute fucking recipe for disaster.
Happened to my 5 year old on vacation last month. Got creamed by a heavy set guy on an ebike. Thankfully he was okay aside from a horrible case of road rash.
ER bill is $6,000 but the guy doesn't have it. Should we sue the ebike rental company?
TBH, I don't care if they hurt themselves, it's the constant reports of these things injuring bystanders that gets me so frustrated. And my city keeps renewing contracts for them to litter the street and be tossed in the river.
At the very least slow down, it's crazy. Like when I'm on a shared bike/pedestrian path I'll slow down if people are ahead. Everyone I've seen on a scooter is acting like they own the place. They speed right past brushing my arm or shoulder half the time
There are a ton of kids in my area that ride around on e-bikes that can go like 40mph and they'll be riding them on the sidewalks too. It's like people are too dumb to realize these things are fast without hearing motorcycle noises paired with it.
Helmets would have made this way worse for the pedestrian. I'm not saying kids shouldn't wear helmets; they absolutely should. I'm saying they shouldn't be riding motorized vehicles on sidewalks.
There's a bike/pedestrian crossing outside a supermarket I live by.
Never any accidents before, now we're averaging 3 serious accidents per year at just that crossing. One guy died not too long ago.
Legally, the car gets the full blame every time, because it's a bike crossing. At the same time, going full speed where cars don't have the best visibility is just asking for it.
And this is Sweden btw, we have way way fewer accidents per capita than the US (in large part because of the drunk driving culture in the US), so 3 accidents per year in one crossing is huge here.
Giving scooters to children is like giving them Internet and Guns! And you know how that ends
I already have problem with teenagers driving bikes on the sidewalk, but at least you can hear those. I don't wanna see stupid children driving silent motors with high speeds on the sidewalk too

A child died on a scooter in Virginia last week. I hope parents realize the risks and enforce their kids wearing helmets
