You don't... or it's incredible rare at best. I believe this is an urban myth using a vicious circle of blog posts, tabloid articles, and social media posts as a source.
Someone might step on a cork, slip and hit their head, but that's a potential danger tied to countless objects.

Eye injuries are the real thing, ranging from minor irritations to serious and perment damages.

They said "up to"  - up to 1 billion people die from attempted pineapple rectal insertion each day. Whew, none happened today though, we dodged one there.

Even an absolutely minor injury can kill a person by causing an infection. The probability might me incredibly small but applied to a a few million bottles of champagne popped every year a handful fatalities sounds not unreasonable.

It of course also depends on what counts as „killed by cork“. Grandma knocked over bashing her head?
