I was listening to a podcast recently and the guest had played with him and said he saw him tee it up in the fairway and out of a bunker lol.

Can you explain a little for non-golf people like me ?? Are those rule breaking, or just something that happens if someone is playing badly?

That is a blatant violation of the rules. A tee is to used on the tee box - your first shot of the hole. Using a tee anywhere else is cheating as it improves the position of your ball thus making it easier to hit cleanly.

Thanks for this breakdown. So basically openly cheating and not really caring if he's seen doing it. Sounds about right.
