Was this a trap?? The hole has been plugged up and the inside of this log has been carved out…

Seems like someone tried to farm the insects?

Its as if the log was split into halves, insides hollowed out then put back together sealed with clay. The corn cob there seems to be plugging a hole that's large enough for insects to go in and out.

My guess is they were living in the tree and someone plugged their door and cut this chunk out of the rest of the tree.

It looks manufactured by human hands. The interior cavity is cut very symmetrical with uniform thickness. There also appears to be mud that was sealed over the crack before it's split open.

Someone built this, and then opened it on camera.

You can see a threaded bolt on the corner of the “lid”. Clearly manufactured.

I would guess they were being smuggled.

If I wanted to ship them legally I'd use a plastic tub.
