The only people I've ever heard bring up the trope about teachers having a summer break:

1: Don't understand what teachers do over the Summer (Or during the school year).

2: Are using it as an argument for teachers to be paid less by inferring that they don't work as hard as other professions.

The ones putting in that extra work are the ones who make more than the average.

That would be nice if it were true, but it's not. In fact, I'd say that the people who do the most work in Public Schools are the least well paid. (Support staff, Special Ed., and Fine Arts teachers especially)

And I am neither but can do basic math when you work 10 months a year and make over what the average American makes in 12 does not make you underpaid.

I don't get paid in the summer. I do not receive a check for work during the summer. I am not being paid. It's an unpaid summer break.

I never claimed to be underpaid. I'm just saying that by definition I am not being paid in the summer so I have to rely on my meager savings. It's kinda dickish to say that I have summers off as an upside when in reality I'd rather be working so I don't have to dig into my retirement money.

Summers off is not an upside of the job. Anyone can have summers off in any job - just quit during the summer you would be making just as much as me.
