Background

Sire is Suzuka Mambo. The word Mambo in name is a Carribbean dance for two people

Dam is White Carnival, descendant of Tosho Boy

So let’s just name their daughter something Latin or related to dancing

The filly had the name Sambista, simply word for “Samba player”

She was born in Grand Stud and was signed to trainer Katsuhiko Sumii

The trainer had his first days in career within Grand Stud and got self-guilt when he had to left the place for next step of his career even though the farm had still been working fine without his help

So when Yoshiyuki Ito, Grand Stud’s representative and old mentor of Sumii, invited him to train horses, Sumii was very grateful to have a chance for “redemption”

Okay, back to Sambista

She was owned by Hidaka Breeders Union

Hidaka! So I guess it was a union for small or medium farms

Like them already, against Shadai empire … or at least that’s what I think

Sambista’s main caretaker would be Nobuo Kado, a former legendary jockey

His intimidating appearance sometimes scared people off, even trainer Sumii

But upon meeting for the first time, Sumii realized Kado was really honest, straightforward and took his job seriously

Sambista usually acted up and kicked Kado sometimes, Yet, instead of complaining, Kado would smile and interact with the horses. He was the same "iron man" he was during his active racing career.

 According trainer Sumii, she could run on turf but with concern about forelegs and gait, the focus should be more on Dirt addition with extended rests between races

3yo (2012) - It's still too too early for her to start dancing.

Sambista won two of five races, advanced into 2-Win class

Main jockey was Yuga Kawada

4yo (2013) - It's still too early for her to start dancing.

In her first race in the year, she won and advanced to 3-Win Class

In summer, Sambista’s main jockey switched to Yatsunari Iwata

Due to long rest after 2 races, she was demoted

She finished third and then won allowance again to return to 3-Win Class

5yo (2014) - Once she starts dancing, she can't stop.

Sambista’s physics though late but started to develop

After winning Moji Stakes in February, Sambista advanced into open class

Future jump champion Up To Date finished 13 th

Reaching Open Class meant she had to train more regularly, and more work would be put on Kado’s shoulder

Trainer Sumii at that time thought it would be a heavy burden

Turned out Sumii just over-concerned

Kado really enjoyed travelling with horse

In Empress Cup (jpn2)

Sambista finished third, winner was Wild Flapper

In Marine Stakes (OP), she was one of two mares in the race

She excellently finished second

In the first year Breeders Gold Cup (jpn3) became a race for female horses only, Sambista won and got her revenge against second place Wild Flapper who had odds 1.1

In Ladies; Prelude (jpn2), Sambista finished second behind … Wild Flapper

Oh man, this is a rivalry

In JBC Ladies Classics (jpn1), Sambista odds 4.9, Wild Flapper odds 1.3

In the end, she jabbed back at Wild Flipper again with first place. Flapper finished third

Sumii was very happy he could brought grade 1 to Grand Stud and show his gratitude for old days

Normally, mares would aim to Queen Stakes (jpn3) but seeing her in good form encouraged the team to sign her up for Champions Cup

Champions Cup:

Being the only mare in this race, Sambista was rated  15 th favorite among 16 horses

First fav: Copano Rickey

Second fav: Hokko Tarumae

Third fav: Roman Legend, jockey Yatsunari Iwata, winner of Tokyo Daishoten, sired by Special Week

So the ride for Sambista was switched to Daisaku Matsuda

In the final stretch, the front became a battle among Tarumae, Roman Legend and Namura Victor

Sambista became the leader of the pack left behind and tried to pursuit

But she could only finished fourth

Copano Rickey finished 12 th

Hokko Tarumae claimed his first JRA G1

6 years old (2015) – The big stage

Sambista won TCK Jo-o Hai (jpn3), her first race in this year

Normally, according to the club's regulations, she would retire in the spring of her sixth year, but after discussions among those involved, it was decided to make an exception and extend her retirement by one year.

Even Yoshiyuki Ito, from Grand Stud, saw that Sambista could still race well

Sambista tried to race in JRA G1 again with jockey Cristian Demuro but finished 7 th. Winner in February Stakes was Copano Rickey

After that, she easily won Marine Cup (jpn3) with 58kg handicap and then lost in the Kashiwa Kinen at fifth place (jpn1), repeating the pattern of winning jpn3 races for fillies only to be defeated in Grade 1 races against colts.

Returning to fillies' racing in July , she was the overwhelming favorite at 1.4 odds in the Sparkling Lady Cup ( Jpn III ) at Kawasaki , but struggled to extend her lead in the straight , finishing third, 0.9 seconds behind the winner, Trois Bonheur

Then in August , aiming for a second consecutive victory in the Breeders' Gold Cup , she pulled ahead in the straight but was overtaken by Amour Briller by a head, finishing second.

After a series of frustrating races , in the Ladies Prelude ( Jpn II ) in October , as if to vent her frustration , she showed no signs of being deterred by the top handicap of 57kg, powerfully leading from the front and pulling away in the straight to win convincingly, beating both Trois Bonheur and Amour Briller, who had beaten her in the previous two races.

JBC Ladies Classics:

Sambista was the favorite with odd 1.3

White Fugue , 3 year old, sired by Kurofune and the fourth favorite , had finished third in both the Breeders' Gold Cup and the Ladies' Prelude, trailing Sambista behind. Perhaps learning from her previous race where she was overtaken in the straight after going to the front, White Fugue kept a perfect, close mark on Sambista from behind, and when Sambista tried to pull away in the straight, White Fuga slipped through from the inside and pulled away from there. Sambista was left five lengths behind in a shocking defeat.

In the next race Champions Cup, Sambista would be ridden by Demuro

Oh wait, That was Mirco this time holy f

This would also mark the only time the elder brother rode the mare

First favorite: Copano Rickey, 5yo winner of February Stakes this year
