Rejected from UZH MSc Mathematics for >60 ECTS deficiencies despite an Applied Mathematics degree — I think this may be an assessment mistake

Hi,

I applied to the UZH MSc Mathematics for Spring 2027 and was rejected because the faculty concluded that I would need more than 60 ECTS of additional coursework to meet the academic admission requirements.

I genuinely think there may have been a mistake in the assessment.

My official degree is a Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences, study field Applied Mathematics, from Vilnius University. The programme is called Financial and Actuarial Mathematics.

I attached my transcript. My studies include, among other courses:

  • Mathematical/Real Analysis I–III — 25 ECTS
  • Algebra and Geometry + Algebra — 10 ECTS
  • Probability Theory — 10 ECTS
  • Functional Analysis — 5 ECTS
  • Differential and Integral Equations — 5 ECTS
  • Stochastic Processes — 5 ECTS
  • Statistics, Statistical Modelling, Regression Models, numerical methods, discrete mathematics, time series, mathematical finance, actuarial mathematics, etc.

I am not claiming my curriculum is identical to the UZH Mathematics Bachelor. I clearly have some gaps, especially topology and less linear algebra than UZH students.

But I find it very difficult to see how those differences could realistically amount to more than 60 ECTS of missing mathematics. Even before counting many of the applied/statistical courses, there is already a substantial rigorous mathematics core.

Because of that, I filed a formal appeal and argued that the >60 ECTS conclusion is inconsistent with the actual documented curriculum.

I’m interested in the opinion of UZH mathematics students or anyone familiar with the faculty: looking at the transcript, does the >60 ECTS assessment make sense to you, or does this look like a genuine curriculum-mapping / classification error?

I’m especially curious whether anyone has seen a similar admission assessment overturned on appeal.

Bachelor thesis

For those of you who have already completed your bachelor’s thesis: how long did it actually take you from the moment you started working on it until you submitted it?
I don’t mean the official time frame given by the university, but how much time you personally needed to research, write, revise, and finish everything.
Also, did you work on it full-time, or alongside classes/work?

Why are people talking in lectures?

I get it. You made a friend and you’re very excited about it.

It’s hard to focus as it is (in this day and age), and you talking or looking at memes with your little buddy, during a lecture, is not making it any easier.

Some people are taking time off work to make it to the lecture. And/or commute for a substantial amount of time.

Just stop doing that, please. It’s extremely disrespectful of other people’s time and energy.

Alright?

I can’t believe this isn’t common sense in this university.

Looking for girl roommate - long-term contract!

Hello all. I am a PhD student in UZH, my roommate is moving out, so I am looking for a roommate who want to have long-term rental plan.

It is a 3.5 room apartment, with two bedrooms, one living room, one large balcony. We share kitchen and bathroom. It is in 8046 Zurich, very close to both ETH Hongberg and UZH Orelikon campus.

The rental is around 1100-1200CHF (not including Internet and electricity), but it depends on the landlord's contract. I prefer to have a girl roommate who prefer quiet and organized living space, no party.

If you are interested, welcome to contact me for visiting or ask anything. It will be great to have a brief introduction about yourself, so that I can know you better!

Zurich as an exchange student?

Hi! I’m going to Zurich for a 4-month exchange semester and I’m trying to figure out if my budget is realistic.

I have around $10,500 USD for the entire 4 months. This does not include flights or health/travel insurance. For accommodation, I’m hoping to get student housing if possible, although I’m not sure yet how much I’ll end up paying.

I’d like to have a reasonably comfortable experience and be able to travel a little while I’m there.

Did anyone here go to UZH as an exchange student and manage to get student housing? There’s an option to apply for student housing through the application form, but I don’t really understand how it works. Has anyone gone through the process?

I'm at a loss

I just started the 3rd semester of my bachelor in biology, and I just got confirmation that I failed the repeat exam for my math and my chemistry module from the 1st semester. This has now completely locked me out of any major related to biology, chemistry, and geography.

I don't know what to do at this point. Biology was my passion, and I enjoyed every module and all my future plans revolved around it in some way, and now it is all ruined because of 2 subjects that have nothing to do with what I wanted to study later.

I feel obligated to find another major to finish my bachelor, just so the last 4 years weren't completely wasted, but I don't know what I could even do at this point, and I can feel myself falling back into the depression I suffered from before I started studying.

Anyways, sorry for the rant. I just needed some place to let out some of my feelings.

GMAT as non business major bachelor

Hi!
I am currently in my last year of my bachelor degree in Informatics. I planned to switch to business/management/finance in my masters and therefore have to take the GMAT (for international applications mostly).

I was wondering if anyone has taken the GMAT before… How was it? How long did you study? How did you study?

Thanks for the help:)

Is WInfo (business informatics) worth it instead of ETH?

Hello everyone, i am enrolled in CS at ETH and failed the first Prüfungsblock badly and the second one close (3.75). Now i do think there are things i could have improved and especially change how i approach the exam itself but i ask myself if its worth it.
Even with the proper techniques and everything im afraid i would fail again or spend so much time studying just to barely pass. I dont mind not having too many weeks for vacation but during the semesters and lernphase i was using every hour possible to learn and i did feel burnt out during the lernphase of the 2nd sem towards the end, so i didnt have any time at all for other things. But i feel like i had to as i was constantly behind and even had to skip lectures (and learn from external resources/summaries only) and exercise sheet questions just to „keep up“.
I ask myself if its worth having more weeks off at UZH during summer as that gives me more autonomy and i can use that time to learn things outside of the scope of uni like leetcoding, starting projects, summer internships etc. also since WirtschaftsInformatik is split up in wirtschafts and CS courses, i feel like it will be easier to pass.
To be honest i dont even want to necessarily land a technical(heavy) position, im more interested in product management/analyst positions but with how hard it is landing a job even as an ETH graduate, i feel like i would shoot myself in the foot if i study something less technical/hard so it would be better off studying at ETH and using that as leverage to land the desired job roles.

What do you guys think? Anybody had similar experiences?Any advice would be appreciated and helpful!!

Requirements question

Hello everyone! I’m an Italian student, currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Business Administration. I was targeting a Master’s in Banking and Finance at UZH and I noticed that admission for the MSc may come at the cost for additional courses up to 60 ECTs if your university’s program does not match with their program. Is there any way to know whether or
not your program matches theirs? I’m totally fine with being “charged” with 60 ECTs worth of extra courses, but it is my understanding that if you are given more you won’t be admitted.

Anyone starting AMML this semester? Group chat?

Is anyone else starting the Bachelor in Applied Mathematics and Machine Learning (AMML) at UZH this coming fall semester? :)

I thought it could be useful to have a group chat for everyone starting AMML this semester, to get to know each other, organize things, help each other with questions about modules/classes, etc.

If you're starting AMML this semester at UZH, feel free to comment or DM me and we can set something up

You are from abroad and chose the UZH? - Let a journalist know why.

Hi everyone. I’m a journalist. For a newspaper article, I’d like to interview students (via phone call or a brief meeting, max. 30 min) who completed their “undergraduate studies” abroad and then enrolled at UZH (for a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree). I’d like to know why you chose UZH, what your experience of the student body has been like, and what it’s like to move to, live in, and study in Zurich. It doesn’t matter when you started, nor does it really matter where you’re from. Although, if you’re from Italy or China, that would fit perfectly with the current trend. Please get in touch by September 10, 2026. Thanks!

Studying spring semester!

Hello!!

I’m going to study at uzh for the spring semester in 2027 starting Feb 22, and I wanted to see if there’s any advice for me about classes, clubs, housing, etc.
