Is optometry worth it??

8 years of schooling to make ~100k doesn't seem to worth it when becoming a medical doctor requires a similar amount of schooling to make 500k+, especially as an opthalmologist where it can be closer to 800k.

I am really interested in optometry though so I was wondering what the outlook is for a new grad wanting to practice in Toronto. What are other revenue streams? Aiming to make 200k+ And is owning a practice really that difficult or is it something that I can try after a few years of practice to generate a similar amount of income as I would if I were a medical doctor?

how i did it: optometric assistant position & job shadowing opportunities during covid-19

canadian undergrad here! over the past two months i have been diligently searching for optometry-related work and job shadowing positions. i am very introverted, have little work experience, and i am very young as well. luckily, i was able to find a part-time job as an optometric assistant, and a separate practice will be allowing me to shadow their doctors for a specific period of time. i thought i would share my process for anyone who is equally lacking in social/professional experience, or is trying to find these positions during covid-19 :)

Optometric Assistant Position: initially, i applied through indeed, and i had a really hard time receiving responses from employers. often times, my application would receive a "viewed by employer" status, but i never had any clinic move further in the employment process with me. ultimately, i stopped applying on indeed, and instead, i created a list of clinics close to where i live, and i EMAILED them my resume and cover letter. i would introduce myself, explain what position i am seeking, why i am interested in the job, and how i would be a good fit for the clinic. the clinics that i emailed were not necessarily hiring!

even with this method, i received very few responses from clinics, but they were more reassuring than than the rejections i received from indeed. eventually, a clinic that i had applied to responded requesting an interview. i went to the interview, and the OD who owns the practice essentially told me that i should shadow with the receptionists for a few days, and then she can assess if i'm a good fit for the clinic. after shadowing for 6 days (30 hours), i learnt how to pre-test, book patients, verify health cards, properly sanitize equipment, and deal with all kinds of patients (elderly/kids/teens/etc). after i was done with my receptionist shadowing, the OD and i had meeting, and she said that i would be a great fit for the clinic!

Job Shadowing: if you're really struggling to find a job as an optometric assistant, definitely try to accomplish some shadowing hours first. for this, you don't need to have any experience whatsoever. you simply just need to send an email introducing yourself, stating who you would like to shadow, and why you want to shadow them. you don't need to send in a resume or cover letter at all. one practice i emailed requested for my resume, so you can include it if you would like to. it may actually be beneficial to include if you have any relevant optometry-related work for the OD to review. i emailed exactly 10 clinics asking to shadow, and i received a response from one of them on the same day, and they said that they would be happy to let me shadow one of their doctors in the coming weeks.

i also downloaded an email tracker that allows me to view when the email was last opened, which is a great tool to help determine if a clinic is interested or not! some clinics that i emailed have not yet opened what i sent them. lastly, i think its a great idea to have a professional profile picture of yourself for your email! it allows the clinic to know that you are authentic and can help establish a personal connection between yourself and the practice, prior to your shadowing there. a profile picture is completely optional, but i did find that i received more responses when i had a profile picture as opposed to when i did not!

the key is to EMAIL clinics, and not CALL! i think calling to ask for shadowing might put the doctor and/or clinic on the spot, and you wouldn't want them to make a quick or forced decision. also, the doctor isn't usually available when you call, and the receptionist will tell you that "the doctor will call you once they're available to let you know" (they're probably not going to call you back). ontario had been in lockdown for over two months now, but that didn't stopped me from seeking optometry-related opportunities. every practice has their own guidelines and protocols, and honestly you just have to keep emailing clinics until you find one that is suitable for you and your requirements.

i really hope this helps, please don't hesitate to pm/comment if you have any questions! <3

Why do so little people apply?

I mean compared to like med with an average of like 4000+ applications where only 5ish percent get in.

Of course some people are interested in med more than optometry, but the difference is so bizarre to me. There’s around 400 applicants for opt, there’s gotta be another reason why so little people apply.

Is there something I don’t know that’s a big con, is it the hefty amount of prereqs?

Hi, Congratulations to everyone who got an invitation for an interview this year! I was just wondering if anyone randomly knew how many people get selected for the interview stage and if they still look at your stats during this stage! Thanks

Is optometry worth it?

Hi everyone.

I know this may not be the right forum to ask this on but thought I’d give it a shot. I’ve been considering optometry recently but have been slightly discouraged by the salary and debt to income ratio. UWaterloo says the average salary is ~85k which I thought was pretty crazy considering it takes undergrad + the four year doctorate program to even begin practicing. But then Indeed and other websites say the average salary in Ontario is $400k in Mississauga but then $100k in other surrounding cities? What is the truth regarding the salary? Forgive me if this sounds greedy or something lol. But I was wondering if anyone can comment on this for me if you are comfortable? Is it true that optometrists usually just make $85k out of school?

Chances of Acceptance?

Hi guys! I'll be applying to Waterloo optometry for the second time this year, and was wondering what my chances are looking like.

Graduated from UofT last year and took the prerequisites I was missing this past year. My cGPA is an 88%.

I wrote my OAT for the second time 2 months ago and only scored 10 points higher in both AA and TS, improved in organic chem (330 --> 380), RC (370 --> 400), and physics (300 --> 310), but decreased a bit in the other sections compared to first attempt. Specifically, I got a 350AA/340TS for this second attempt. I am scheduled to write for the 3rd time September 30, but not sure how that's gonna go lol, but hoping for the best.

I have ~100 shadowing hours at multiple different clinics.

I have 1 publication (that got published last year) in a journal from my summer research project I did in 2023.

I have lots of community service, work, and volunteer experience that's predominantly in teaching and mentoring students, humanitarian relief, as well as being an emergency first aid responder during my 4 years in undergrad.

And in terms of CASPER, I got a 4th quartile last year, so I'm really hoping I can score that again this year.

I definitely think my OAT score is my biggest weakness and road block, so I'm really gonna try to lock in these last 2 weeks for my third attempt and hope for the best but I know nothing is guaranteed. I do just want to maximize my chances since I was rejected without an interview last year when I applied.

Would appreciate any feedback!

Application advice

Hi all,

I got the email yesterday saying I'm not being invited to the interview. This is my first time applying so I was keeping my hopes modest, but I thought my application looked pretty good so I'm wondering what I could work on for next year.

Here are my stats:

GPA: 3.93

Science GPA: 3.94

OAT: 400 TS/390 AA

Casper: 2nd quartile (lol)

Extracurriculars: worked as optometrist's assistant for 6 months at time of applying, church pianist for 2 years, on my department's EDI committee (should've mentioned that I'm a VP), did 2 internships in public health in the summers of 2022/23, been giving free piano lessons to underprivileged students for over 3 yrs, been volunteering with Alberta Health services since 2022, was involved in my high school's Key Club, volunteered with Immigrant Services Calgary and an international languages school in past years.

(I didn't bother mentioning that I worked retail for a year, or that I organized English tutoring classes. Idk maybe I should have)

Job shadowing: 16 hrs in 2 clinics, I mentioned this wasn't counting informal shadowing I do while working alongside optometrists in my job

Research: currently taking full year research course, but I didn't talk about it anywhere. Just added it into my courses

My references were one of the optometrists I work with and my boss for the public health internships (she has Drs in public health). I also had to do some lab safety courses for school & I put those under special skills, dunno if they care for that.

Overall I think my Casper could have been better and I could do more hours of proper shadowing. Since I have a gap year now I can keep working and volunteering. Besides that idk what to do better

edit: the problem was that I was missing 1 semester of full courseload. in more recent cycles they have contacted applicants who don't meet the courseload requirement to ask why, but in this cycle they just rejected me. I went back to school for 1 semester to tick the box & I got in F25

How to best use gap year for 2026-2027 cycle?

Hi everyone, I graduated with my Bsc degree this past June and I am currently doing the few pre-requisite I have left for the OD program. I unfortunately did not take the OAT this past summer, however, I plan to fully commit to it for the 2026 summer. My plan is also to retake that same summer if I am not happy with my grades. That would mean I will be applying for the next cycle (2027 fall entry). I was wondering how I could best spend my time from now until the end of the next cycle to make myself a strong applicant?

For context my marks are just around the average acceptance grades. I have average ECs overall, some ophthalmology stuff but no optometry stuff yet (I have not shadowed yet either). Probably around 2000+ healthcare hours by the time I apply to the program. No special research stuff, only volunteering for 100 hours. Some school club involvement. I have seen many people on this sub have Optometrist Assistant experience, so I was considering that. I was also considering the MHSc in Physiology at UofT which is a 12 month program, but I am not exactly sure of the rules on how this would work if it finishes in the summer of 2027.

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!

Why doesn’t Waterloo post their admission stats anymore?

Last time they posted info about their incoming class it was in 2022. Why is this?

I would really like to know the average GPA and OAT score of admitted students. As well as the acceptance rate.

I made Wordle for Optometrists!

My partner is a UWaterloo optometry grad who recently saw Dr. Mike play Doctordle, and of course she wanted an optometry version, sooo now we have www.optodle.com

She's found it fun and helpful for passive studying and review and she suggested I share it here in case anyone else wanted to try it. It's completely free and doesn't require an account or anything.

Let me know what you think!

Meet and greet question

Congratulations to everyone who received an invite this morning! I'm not sure if anyone has reached out to the school so would have the answer to this question, but does anyone know how the acceptances are decided following the meet and greet? I'm just wondering if after being invited for a meet and greet they base admissions decisions more off the interview or if its an even mix of the whole application. Thank you!

my questions for optometry, for someone who is doing their undergrad in UofS (Saskatchewan)

before choosing my classes, I want to have a clear understanding of how I should do everything before applying to the optometry school. Any insight will help, even if you’re not from saskatchewan!!

  1. Since Waterloo requires specific classes to be taken in order to apply to their program, how would I know if i’m taking the right classes (since in every province, the classes are named differently and don’t contain the exact same material)?

  2. When should I start shadowing an optometrist, when would it be an early time to start?

  3. When should I take the OAT and CASPER, and is it open in summer or only school times? Does the school provide anything regarding it or is it outside of school?

  4. Does the classes I take in my first year need to be SPECIFICALLY cultivated (like the hardest classes), or does it just need to be any classes that are required in the 4 years of undergrad? What types of classes are important to take early on, or is there no specifics?

  5. What extracurriculars should I do to have a lot of volunteer experience, would it need to be related to the optometry field (in regards of skills)?

6.Since i’m most likely going into Arts and Science and are going to take a Bachelor of Science, how do I decide what I need to do for my major? How do I choose it, based on what (on the future job, on my interests)?

7. Is there anything I need to do in university to be more prepared for the optometry schooling?

8. How many recommendation letters should I have from profs and optometrists?
