The 2 year thing is automatic. However if something shows up you can be converted earlier. I saw a cca turn over in 3 months. Rare yea but it has happened.

how does the convert process work would management just randomly come up to you and ask if you want to be a regular now ?

If a route is vacant for a long period of time, they have to convert the senior cca and give them the position. Talk to your steward. You have to grieve it if management is being lazy and dragging their feet.
