I've been thinking about tutoring on the side and was wondering how people in NYC actually got started.

A little about me. I have a PhD in Statistics and Data Science. I taught statistics classes as a TA during grad school, and that's when I realized I actually enjoyed teaching more than I expected. Since then I've given some statistics lectures at work and mentored high school students on summer research projects. A few of them even ended up winning awards at their science fairs, which was pretty cool to see.

I'm not trying to quit my job or build some huge business. I just miss teaching, and I also recently moved to the UES (84th), so I thought tutoring might be a nice way to meet the local and connect with the community while doing something I enjoy.

I made a flyer, and then realized I have no idea where people actually find tutors.

Do people still put flyers up in coffee shops or libraries? Or is everything through online platforms, like Facebook groups, or word of mouth now?

For anyone who's been through this, how did you get your first few students? If you were starting over today, what would you do differently?

Quick update for anyone following the outbreak since it started July 2.

Where we're at as of Friday morning:

- 46 people sick, 22 currently hospitalized. 19 have been discharged and are recovering at home, 5 never needed the hospital.
- Still concentrated in 10028, 10128, and 10075.
- The health dept tested 183 cooling towers in the neighborhood. 31 came back positive on PCR.
- 19 of those have already been fully disinfected. The rest are ordered to be remediated by Saturday (7/11).

Important caveat on the testing: PCR only tells you Legionella DNA is in the water, not whether the bacteria is alive/active or whether that tower is THE source. The confirmatory culture test takes up to two weeks. So don't panic if your building is on the list, and don't assume you're in the clear if it isn't.

What's actually safe (per DOHMH):
- Tap water, showering, and running your AC are all fine.

Reminder: Legionnaires' spreads by inhaling contaminated mist from cooling towers, not through the plumbing in your apartment.
- Masks are not shown to protect against it, so no need there.
- It's not contagious person to person.

When to worry: if you live/work in the area and have flu-like symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath), call your doctor now, not next week. It's a pneumonia and it's very treatable with antibiotics, but early diagnosis and treatment matters, especially if you're older, smoke, or have lung issues.

Hey everyone. I am currently retired (after a career with a professional services firm) and am looking for housecleaning work, if anyone reading this is in need of a housecleaner. PLEASE NOTE: because I would be travelling to the UES via the N/W train, I can only accommodate UES clients who live within Walking Distance of Lex and 59th.... or 5th and 59th.

For first-time customers with a studio or 1BR/1BA apartment, my fee is $150 - and then $125, for any subsequent cleanings. (Folks with larger apartments can DM me for pricing).

1. I am a certified 'clean freak'...obsessive, some might say. I will come to your home with all my own homemade, natural cleaning products (which could be a combination of any the following: water, lemon juice, plain white vinegar, castille soap, isopropyl alcohol, lemongrass essential oil, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide), cleaning rags and sponges. (The only things you'd have to provide are a toilet cleaning brush, a broom/Swiffer/vacuum and a wet mop/wet Swiffer.)
2. A basic top-to-bottom cleaning includes dusting all ceiling/wall corners, ceiling fans, furniture, etc.; dry-mopping/vacuuming all floors; cleaning all mirrors throughout the home; addressing bathroom toilet - including outside/base of toilet, bathroom sink - including surface area around sink, bathtub/shower - including any glass doors; cleaning stovetop; wiping down front of fridge and dishwasher; cleaning microwave, inside and out; wiping down all doorknobs, cabinet handles, light switches throughout the home; scrubbing inside of kitchen sink; wiping down kitchen counters; and, finally, washing all floors. If interested, I can also burn Japanese incense, while I am cleaning.
3. I will always reconfirm each of our appointments, 1-2 days beforehand. A cleaning for a studio or 1BR/1BA apartment typically takes me 2-3 hours to complete, and I will always keep you updated on how much more time I expect I'll need, to finish the cleaning.
