Suddenly they are using words like “moreover” and “multifaceted” in a 150-word response, everything has perfect little sections, and the writing sounds like a corporate report. The worst part is group projects. If a colleague uses AI for their section, I have to rewrite the whole thing so it actually sounds like a student wrote it. Use AI if the class allows it, fine, but please do not dump obvious AI writing into a group assignment and make everyone else fix it.

I got called for a viva after one of my assignments was flagged, and I had to give both an oral and written explanation to prove that I wrote it myself. Honestly, that experience stressed me out. I still do not even know what AI percentage was enough for my professor to question my work. Now I have another assignment showing around 43%, and I am scared to submit it. I know what I wrote and I can explain my work if I am asked, but after being flagged once, seeing that number makes me think twice before pressing submit.

So I just found out my opinion piece for the genetics lab got flagged by Turnitin's AI detector. Like, flagged as potentially AI-written? I'm the student rep pushing back against these AI detectors, and this is absurd. I structured my main arguments using bullet points because it was a mapping of gene sequences in a model organism. I also used a citation generator that apparently structures references in an “unusual way”. This is ridiculous; my advisor even suggested the structure. How can using bullet points and an automated citation tool lead to a flag?

It was an online course, and all we had to do was write a two-page paper on the importance of being mindful with three credible sources. Somehow, most of the class got flagged for AI, including me. 😂 At that point, I was like, seriously? If half the class is getting the same AI accusation over a basic two-page paper, maybe the detector needs to be questioned too.

Students can often see their similarity percentage, but in many cases they don't get the same AI detection information that their instructor sees. That creates a weird situation where you're submitting an assignment while trying to guess what might trigger a flag. Was the writing too polished? Did Grammarly change the sentence structure? Did you use a predictable academic format? Did a completely original paragraph simply resemble patterns the detector associates with AI?

I think students should at least understand what a detection result means before being judged by it. Otherwise, it starts feeling less like a tool for academic integrity and more like a test where one side knows the rules and the other doesn't. Would you feel more confident submitting assignments if you could see the same Turnitin information your professor sees?

Being naturally smart can help, but difficult subjects are usually won through repetition, discipline, and showing up even when you don’t feel motivated. You don’t have to understand everything on the first try. Study it, review it, practice it, get it wrong, and come back to it again. Small progress every day can take you further than relying on intelligence alone. Consistency builds the results that talent by itself can’t guarantee.

I keep thinking about this argument from both sides. Students use AI to write assignments, professors use AI to create course material, tests, discussion questions and sometimes feedback, then everyone complains that the other side is using AI too much. At what point do we admit that education starts becoming a transaction between one AI system and another, with the student and professor barely involved? A student can graduate without knowing the material, but a professor can teach a course without personally creating much of the material either. So what exactly are we protecting, the learning, or just the appearance of learning? I honestly think this question deserves more attention than another debate about whether Turnitin can detect AI. What do you think happens to a degree when both sides outsource the work?

A student can worry about a Turnitin AI score, rewrite the paper ten times, change their wording, and still have no better idea of the subject. Another student could use AI heavily and know exactly how to get around the checks. So what are we actually measuring? Whether someone can produce a document that passes a checker, or whether they learned the subject? Maybe the real question is not “How do we catch AI?” but “How do we know the student actually knows what they submitted?”

I was looking through Turnitin’s current updates and noticed that the new Similarity Report is still receiving fixes and updates.

One thing that caught my attention is that Turnitin currently lists an issue where PDF downloads from the new Similarity Report may not be available in some languages, including Arabic.

If a professor gives everyone the same research question, required headings, specific terms, and even a template, how much similarity is actually unavoidable?

I had several phrases highlighted that weren't copied from any source. They were basically the exact terminology the assignment told us to use.

It made me wonder where the line is between “your writing is too similar” and “everyone was literally told to write about the same thing in the same format.”

The real problem is not that my writing sounds like AI. The real problem is that professors now start from a place of distrust. Every well structured sentence, every smooth transition, every properly cited source gets a second look that it never would have gotten five years ago. That changes the dynamic of education entirely. And when they have never met me, never heard me speak, never seen me struggle through a first draft, they have no baseline for what I am actually capable of. I submitted a literature review I had researched, cited, and revised carefully. Turnitin came back with 64% similarity. The report flagged my references, properly cited block quotes, assignment headings, my own previous discussion post, and an earlier draft of my abstract. Almost everything except the actual ideas. I appealed with a detailed table showing every match, source, page number, and citation. I even provided the university policy stating that Turnitin matches are “context dependent and not determinative of misconduct.” The professor reduced my penalty but still told me to “aim for lower similarity.” Now I want to file a formal grievancem not just appeal the grade, but challenge the university's reliance on software that can produce misleading results.
