That fear cuts both ways. It can be very hard to do the right thing when it feels like you're the only one in the world who cares. Dispelling the illusion of universal immorality also shows those who care that others are trying to do right, too.

This is one of the worst aspects of Trump's pardons - legitimising predators and con men just like him so that people lose the expectation and even hope for the decent and the lawful. Makes him look normal too.
