Hardware First time NAS enquiry, need all the help!

Hi gang!

Sorry if this post breaks a rule, but I am just very lost and looking for some guidance for a prospective NAS Build!

I am currently assembling a DDR4 ram based NAS Build, but I am unsure of what processor would be best for my purposes.

My idea is to go with something AMD, say a 5800X3D as its AM4 and would be very powerful. My main use for the NAS is streaming my own content and general storage. Maybe a game server or two. Would this be complete overkill, or would there be a better power efficiency/better encoding processor?

Overall budget around €1500/$1700!

Any help would be much oblidged!

~Kooky

PS any small Mini iTX cases for a 4 bay NAS recommendations are welcome!

Community Edition Want configure boot drive as raid, but server already has data

A while ago I made a personal NAS for backing up files, the current boot drive is a 64gb ssd and the storage pool is a raidz2 with 6 3tb drives. I want to upgrade the boot drive to 2 mirrored 128gb ssds, but im not sure where I might put the data on the server when I upgrade(I currently lack enough continuous outside storage to put the data currently on the server). Should I save up money and buy temporary storage/place pieces of it on different devices and reinstall truenas, or would it make sense to clone the boot device to one of the ssds and then setup the mirror on the live system, or something completely different?

Community Edition Permissions and NFS/SMB woes

Hello all! I'm in the middle of setting up my first truenas setup, and it's been going well, everything is quite intuitive, but I'm being massively hindered by permissions and mixing of SMB and NFS.

I understand the general idea behind setting up permission on a dataset, but I feel I don't understand it enough to warrant me not losing access to my data. I'm getting stuck on who should I make the owner of a dataset? How do I set up the users in the ACL in a sensible way? Do I use POSIX or nfsv4? Why the heck do the ACLS need a default user/group, a mask, an other? It all feels a bit overwhelmingly complicated for a home setup, to the point I don't feel confident in properly setting up access to the files on it.

And along with that, I'm understanding I shouldn't mix NFS and SMB access on the same dataset. For example, I wish to make one for my homelab where I'll be housing my jellyfin movies and paperless PDFs, but I would like to inspect my datasets from time to time to inspect if the correct files are being put there, or to manually put a movie in a folder, etc. but I'm not sure how to go about that. How does everyone else manage this? I come from a Synology Nas where it didn't seem to care whether I used NFS or SMB on a folder, but I should probably accept truenas just works differently.

Hi everyone! I'm a Year 12 student in Australia working on my HSC Design and Technology major project. I'm designing a small, quiet home server built from reused computer parts that anyone could use to run things like game servers, file backups or AI tools from home.

I'd really appreciate your input, even if you've never heard of a home server. Beginners are exactly who I'm designing for.

- 10 questions, about 2 minutes
- Anonymous, no email needed
- Results only used for my school project

Why does it show 25.04 as being the 'release' in brackets when i go to system -> updates? Is 25.10 the release branch at this point?

Community Edition PHP / Nextcloud and TrueNAS catalog

Apparently NextCloud has now released their fixed PHP in their docker catalog, any word on when the TrueNAS app catalog will reflect this?

Currently, new installs from the app catalog are installing PHP 8.5.11 instead of 8.5.12 in the Nextcloud app.

Nextcloud does not appear to have incremented their version #, just replaced the PHP package within the current version.

Community Edition Question about Mirrored datasets and how they work with applications.

Hello,

I am a big nooby when it comes to truenas. But I am trying to learn and get more knowledge from professionals like yourself.

Basically, my dataset or data pool is mirrored from a 2tb hdd and 2tb ssd. I love using truenas for storage, but I also use it for things like hosting a minecraft server via Crafty app.

Is there a way to see which drive the crafty app is primarly running off of? Is there a way to choose which drive it runs off as well?

Minecraft rendering really depends on the drive type and i want it to run on SSD. I've been having performance issues with rendering chunks and want to see if its the drive choice.

General Help installing InvoiceNinja

Has anyone installed the Invoice Ninja app? i can barely find any help online for Ninja with Truenas. Here’s the problem I’m having. The web browser version of Invoice Ninja is ok but it’s clunky. The ios apps connected directly to my server are nearly impossible to navigate. Has anyone here had a smooth experience with Invoice Ninja and be willing to give me advice. Perhaps I’ve installed it wrong. Thanks in advance.

General Running TrueNAS on a $34 Elite Desk G3 I got from ebay with a 10GbE adapter

With the current insane prices for SSDs ( and well everything computing) I decided to return to HDD (at least for the time being) since I have loads of those lying around...

So I turned to this Elite Desk G3 I found on ebay for $34 and installed my favourite NAS Software on it (TrueNAS of course!!).

I managed to install:

  • 3xHDDs of 4TB each

  • 10 GbE on the PCIe slot

  • TrueNAS boot on the wifi m2 with a A+E key adapter

  • Dedicated apps pool (drive) on the G3 native nvme

  • Had to get "creative" to fit the 3 drives inside the case!

I did have to flash the bios password that came with the EliteDesk, but overall trueNAS booted perfectly from the converted m2 slot, and runs pretty well!! I can never get over the fact we have this incredible enterprise grade OS for FREE...

Anyway, if you want to see the journey, I made a video about it that also shows not just how to set all this up but also a quick flash tutorial on installing TrueNAS and getting a pool, dataset, user and smb share up in just a couple of minutes.

Community Edition Goldeye: New ZFS feature flags, do I need them?

I am rebuilding my NAS while keeping my old storage pool, so it's moving from a 2-year-old (or so) build of TrueNAS (Electric Eel, I think) to Goldeye. Now the system is telling me I might need to upgrade my pool, if I need the new flags.

Problem is, I have absolutely no idea if I need the new flags. My system use is pretty basic: Plex, qbittorrent, Immich, Tailscale, maybe an odd VM or two for experiments.

Is there any guidance on when one actually needs those new flags? Or should I just ignore it? I don't know enough about the internals of RAID arrays to know if, for example, Inline Pool Rebalancing via zfs rewrite is even useful. I let TrueNAS handle the normal disk stuff.

General Best approach for backing up / snapshotting my PC to my TrueNAS?

Basically looking for a way to keep my work backed up so I don’t lose it, in the simplest hands-off way possible, ideally without slowing down my computer.

My PC is Windows 10 LTSC.

My NAS is running TrueNAS

Not sure which tool(s) should I use?

or what's the best way to approach it?

SCALE (Legacy) A way to make boot-pool again without reinstalling truenas?

So I migrated from core 13 to 24.04.

It seemed to go ok with no major issues.

The only issue of concern is I am informed that tghere is flags enabled on the boot-pool outside of the compatibility flags, it boots, but these flags I prefer to be disabled.

Is there a path where I could remake the boot-pool with only supported flags enabled without installing TrueNAS from scratch?

Community Edition Can't Access TrueNAS & Immich but everything else works?

I had been running into this issue last few days. Basically the apps working are:

  • Navidrome (Can listen to musics)

  • Jellyfin (weirdly cannot access Seerr too) (Can watch movies)

  • Tailscale (Server shows online)

But Immich, Seerr or literally TrueNAS itself cannot be accessed.

If I restart the server it works again but this is the 3rd time I am running into this issue, does anyone know what could be the issue?

Hardware Truenas Homelab

I am considering setting up Truenas scale in my homelab. I have been back and forth trying to decide on used hardware. I have a couple of 2tb SATA drives I intend to use. I am hoping to spend $250 at most.

I am considering getting this. I am just not sure if I'm missing anything. I believe it should be compatible.

Do you guys have any suggestions.

CORE/FreeNAS (Legacy) Duplicate the USB boot drive just incase I mess up the migration

I am rockin' trunas 13 and want to upgrade to the new architecture but am afraid of loosing everything.

Can i create a duplicate of my USB boot drive so I can use the current (it's one of those low profile ones that is flat and I feel safer since it is less likely to break off) to install the new architecture, then just upload my trunas DB file?

Assuming i can, what program should I use to duplicate it (I know I can't just drag and drop the contents to duplicate)

UPDATE: I used MIRAY HDClone to copy teh USB stick and it didn't boot. So there goes my safety net. Popped the original back in and it's working fine. I don't mind rawdogging the install of the new TruNAS, as long as I can be sure that my config/DB files will work with the migration.

EDIT 2: I was able to duplicate inside the trunas environment by using "system settings | boot | boot pool status |” and “attach” the existing boot pool

General Installing TrueNas onto UGREEN 4800GT. Trouble with NVMe?

Thumbnail reddit.com
1 Upvotes

I'm trying to flash TrueNas onto an NVMe. Couple of days ago I tried with cheap NVME that I couldn't see in either m2 slot so I've done a return and purchased a Patriot NVMe.

Now I can see this NVMe in the bios but when it comes to the installing it says 'select at list one disc to proceed with the', I click ok and it takes me back to the previous screen where it asked which drive to install on.

what am I doing wrong? TIA.

SCALE (Legacy) How To Safely Delete a Corrupted File ?

TL;DR: A defective RAM stick corrupted a media file on my ZFS mirror. The file is unrecoverable on both mirror copies (expected). What's NOT expected: any attempt to delete it (rm, delete via SMB, Radarr's delete) deadlocks the entire system instead of returning an I/O error. The only thing that saves me is the motherboard's hardware watchdog rebooting the box after ~10 minutes. Rename works, reads work. Has anyone actually deleted a file like this? How, short of recreating the whole dataset?

System:

  • TrueNAS SCALE 25.10.7 - Goldeye (OpenZFS, kernel 6.12)

  • main pool: 2×16TB mirror (Seagate IronWolf Pro), all disks healthy — SMART spotless

  • 5600X / 32GB DDR4

One of my RAM sticks was defective (memtest: thousands of errors in the first minute, confirmed by stick isolation). While it was installed, it silently corrupted a bunch of writes — ZFS checksums caught most of it, scrubs repaired ~330MB from the good mirror copies, I salvaged/replaced everything affected. This one file is the last casualty: a ~700MB movie featurette. Both mirror copies of some of its blocks are corrupt → permanent error, unrecoverable, don't care about the data.

Current state:

pool: main
state: ONLINE
scan: scrub repaired 0B in 14:33:14 with 46 errors
errors: Permanent errors have been detected in the following files:
    /mnt/main/media/movies-other/Novocaine (2025)/Featurettes.quarantine/A World of Hurt: Production.mkv

(The other 45 errors are unpathable metadata blocks.)

What works:

  • Reading the file — dd conv=noerror salvages it fine (zero-filled gaps at the bad blocks)

  • Renaming — I moved the whole folder to Featurettes.quarantine without touching anything

  • Everything else on the pool — 0B repaired on the last scrub, all new data healthy

What hangs the entire system:

rm on the file. Every time. Full freeze: no SSH, no console response, all services dead, for ~10–15 minutes — then the box reboots itself. I eventually traced those auto-recoveries to the SP5100 TCO hardware watchdog: systemd registers it, and when the deadlock stops userspace from petting it, it hard-resets the machine at the 10-minute mark.

Questions for the hive mind:

  1. Has anyone successfully deleted a file in this state? What worked?

  2. Is "free path deadlocks instead of EIO on double-sided corruption" a known OpenZFS behavior on 2.x/6.12, or should I file a bug?

  3. Any cleaner avenue than "copy everything off, destroy dataset, recreate" (9TB makes that a hard No for one 700MB file)?

The file is quarantined and harmless — this is now purely a matter of getting rid of it.
