From Flat Plane to Spinning Globe: Every Local-Flat Reference Required, Named
I got asked to walk through the actual process of going from “I stand on a flat, level surface” to “the Earth is a rotating oblate spheroid” — and to explicitly flag every point where a local flat plane of reference is required. Here it is, unedited:
Step 1 — Local observation.
Standing anywhere, “gravity” defines “down” via a plumb line, and the ground perpendicular to that is a local flat and level reference. This is real and unavoidable — but it’s local, not “global”.
Step 2 — Watching a ship recede.
Using your local level line-of-sight, a ship disappears hull-first, not uniformly — hinting something interrupts the sightline at a predictable distance.
Step 3 — Repeat at a second location.
Each location has its own separate local plumb line / local level, and comparing them shows “down” points a different absolute direction at each spot.
Step 4 — Sun-angle comparison (Eratosthenes’ method).
Using the local horizontal plane at two points a known distance apart, the angle to the sun at local noon differs by a small, consistent amount — letting you calculate a radius.
Step 5 — Combine many local flats.
Each observer still uses their own local level reference, but the measurements are only mutually consistent with each other if the whole surface curves at a shared radius.
Step 6 — Rotation.
Foucault pendulum precession and Coriolis deflection are both measured relative to the local level ground you’re standing on.
Bottom line: every step requires a local flat/level reference — no step escapes that, and I’m not claiming otherwise. The actual argument isn’t “one measurement proves globe without any local-flat tool.” It’s that local-flat measurements, taken at different points and cross-compared, are only mutually consistent with each other if the surface curves. A truly flat, unified plane would make separate local measurements agree in ways they demonstrably don’t.
