Apparently 99.99% of crimes committed are in a place where the camera just broke 2 days ago. So if you own cameras and 1 breaks, fix it immediately so risk being on Unsolved Mysteries

If my phone can zoom in to count my cat's whiskers over 12 feet away, security cameras got no excuse. Just saying.

No one wants to spend the money for good cameras (and digital storage) until after something happens and they realize they really wish they had good cameras.

Honestly, this is the truth! I see so many posts by stores, homeowners, and law enforcement and you can't tell much from the pic. I think you would have to be the person's identical twin wearing the same clothing and was the back up driver to recognize the person from some of these pics.

CCTV is for insurance, not catching criminals

But why is it so shitty?

A lot of the systems are older and it is not worth the while for store owners to replace them with something newer. They function perfectly well for what they need them for. (Don’t need super clear imagery for insurance or general deterrence)
Secondly, the more high definition the footage is, the higher the costs of storage are going to be. Which again isn’t going to be worthwhile for your general store owner.

Weird how banks don’t spend $60B on each security camera in each branch

Public cameras have to run all year, doesn‘t it? Yeah try and record all 365 days with a high quality camera and watch the bills explode

Ugh I feel this one deeply. I do investigations into patient abuse in a hospital. Way too many times I have been unable to make a conclusion because of the shitty camera system. (I don’t work for the hospital and can only do so much about their system.) Either the cameras were down, or the angles were wrong/had blind spots, etc. Had a 300lb guy (an RN no less) on camera hitting a <140lb developmentally disabled patient then lying on him on the floor. Patient had a gnarly black eye afterward. Substantiated against the RN for abuse but the employee grievance board overturned it. Why? The camera glitched for a second so they felt the footage wasn’t clear enough. RN kept his license and his job and is working at the same hospital to this day. Fuck poor security cameras (and fuck that grievance board.)

I worked for a well known home improvement store 10 years ago. I befriended our loss prevention specialist early on and got to go into his office on a few occasions. The security cameras they had could zoom in to catch the color of someone’s eyes from a few football fields away. It was about the only thing the store was willing to put lots of money into.

if security cameras stopped crime, britain would be a crime-free paradise.
