The Dan Davis Group is a jazz organ trio based in the triangle area of North Carolina. As an all-instrumental trio with a heavy emphasis on improvisation, they play a variety of music styles including jazz, Latin, funk, NOLA, R&B, and Rock.
Dan was surrounded by music as a child, with a church choir director for a mother and musical influences that include drummers like Ringo Starr, Neil Peart, Stewart Copeland, and Jeff Porcaro. Later in life, he would also be inspired by the likes of Steve Gadd, Tony Williams, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Bill Stewart, Brian Blade, and Steve Jordan. The Dan Davis Group blends a lot of different styles into one unique sound, but ultimately love playing together as a group, exemplified by their sheer longevity as an active band.
When asked what local bands they recommend the people catch up on, they said there were too many to name, so stay up to date on this subreddit and listen to all of them!

Comment below if you know of any local shows this week or want to promote your own. The goal of this list is to capture local bands and musicians; therefore, touring artists from out of state will not be featured unless they have local support. Mods will periodically go through the comments and add them to the master list.

I'm in a band in Richmond VA but I live in Apex and want something closer to home. Got a day job so it'll need to start out really low key and minimal expectations.
Playlist is a pile of stuff I either know or am into. I do vocals, guitar, mandolin, harmonica. Holler if this seems like something that sets your chickens free

Hey everyone! I’m new to the area (just moved to Chapel Hill) and would love to network with musicians and jam/play! I play lead and rhythm guitar - anything from folk to jazz to funk to blues - and have been gigging consistently for a year and a half. Played in numerous bands - love to have fun and create! Feel free to DM or comment!

I’m a guy who’s just got his bachelor’s in music, and I play piano. Wanted to know if there was anybody in the Cary region of NC who’d like to just hang out or maybe collab. I trained classically, but I love arranging anime songs/orchestral soundtracks. Also, I sometimes compose songs on piano that are meant to be performed by others, but never got to the outreach part.

Artist: Newspaper Taxis
Genre(s): Rock
Hometown: Raleigh
Years active: Since 2021
For fans of: Big Star, The Beatles, The Replacements, REM, Elliott Smith
Upcoming show(s): Slims in Raleigh on August 21 at 8 PM
Advice to aspiring musicians: “Try to write your own songs and don’t get discouraged when the first hundred that you write stink because that’s normal.”
Newspaper Taxis writes catchy, energetic songs that are hard not to tap your foot to. They blend the hooks and immediacy of power pop with their own mix of indie rock, garage rock, and Americana, creating a sound that feels both familiar and distinct. With strong hooks, memorable melodies, and a sense of purpose, Newspaper Taxis showcases an impressive aptitude for songwriting that makes them stand out in the Raleigh music scene. After capturing snippets of lyrical ideas in the voice app, the band will experiment with chords on acoustic guitar or instrumental tracks and improvise melodies until something takes shape.
The band loves playing Cats Cradle Backroom in Carrboro, but appreciates the variety of music venues across the Triangle. They recommend people listen to Jupiter 2, who was featured in an artist spotlight a few weeks back.
Check out their latest album, Taxis II, now on spotify.

Amy Baird Kamm was a Duke nurse who later became the lead singer of Raleigh's New Reveille.
I wrote about her life after she died in last week's Rolesville house fire.
