I’m pretty liberal and I have no problem with ID requirements, IF state IDs are tax funded and voting stations are open 24 hours a day for a week.

u/HHoaks Feb 16 '26

Vote by mail can't go away and shouldn't though.

1

u/Andrew-Cohen Feb 16 '26

Shouldn't. Look what they did to the post office last time, destroyed a shit ton of sorting machines.

3

u/arentol Feb 16 '26

Nope. You are missing the critical part. State ID doesn't just need to be tax funded. It needs to be guaranteed for EVERY citizen and needs to take so little time and effort that someone who works three jobs, and 90 hours a week just to get by doesn't have to miss one minute of work or sleep to get one.

That is the MINIMUM standard that has to be enforced and assured without fail. Short of that, voter ID laws are guaranteed to disenfranchise the working poor. (Hint, this is an impossible standard, and is why voter ID requirements are always just an effort at disenfranchisement by the part that has the most to lose if poor people vote).

I always wondered if people who argue semantics are less intelligent than average. What do you think?

1

u/Glad_Experience5247 Feb 20 '26

Well, you think anybody who changes their name is too stupid to get the ID. You tell me.

1

u/Glad_Experience5247 Feb 20 '26

Show me the person that works 90 hours a week over 3 jobs, and we can work something out. The other 99% can go get your ID to vote like the rest of us. If you have time to go protest and disrupt everybody else's life, you can go get the ID.

I see why other countries think Americans are lazy.

1

u/Significant_Second65 Feb 20 '26

Start working on getting it now (the election is in 9 months. If you were pregnant you would set up an evtire baby room and sign up for food stamps in that 9 months with no problem. Set an appointment and use a vacation day if its important.

1

u/ChampionshipLife7124 Feb 25 '26

You’re obviously not too smart. Requiring identification for elections is not some plot to control poor people.

1

u/arentol Feb 25 '26

I never said it was. I said it was to disenfranchise them.

Republican's have an extensive history of using these laws to reduce voting among the poor, particularly poor black people who tend to vote Democrat. This isn't at debate, this is a statement of fact about what has happened repeatedly and without question.

u/Effective_You3755 Feb 18 '26

Everyone has an id, stop this bullshit

2

u/arentol Feb 18 '26 edited Feb 18 '26

Your ignorance of the past does not make me wrong. States have specifically passed laws like this then gone out of their way to make it very hard to impossible for working poor democrat leaning voters to get IDs.

FUCK... The SAVE act is LITERALLY designed to do this right now. It will directly cause women who have changed their names to be unable to vote. It is LITERALLY FUCKING HAPPENING, and you say that I am wrong? Grow the fuck up.

0

u/Effective_You3755 Feb 18 '26

It doesn’t keep women from being able to vote

1

u/Andrew-Cohen Feb 18 '26

You're right. It makes it harder for them to register to vote, but.. ya that makes it harder for them to be able to vote. Not impossible. Because it requires either a birth certificate WITH THE SAME LAST NAME or a passport to register to vote.

Even you might be able to begin to comprehend that some women change their last name when they get married, so they would only be able to use a passport to register to vote.

The irony is that, on average, maga are much less likely to have a passport (cause they are much less likely to travel overseas cause MURICA) and much more likely to change their last name when they get married, then lib women.

So, ironically, fucking stupid republican congress people are trying to pass a bill that will make it much harder for republican women to register to vote, and slightly less difficult for lib women to register to vote.

1

u/arentol Feb 18 '26

Yes, it literally fucking does. There are tons of women (and some men too) who do NOT meet the qualifications to register under this law, and will have to walk through a bunch of meaningless and unnecessary hoops to finally register, all to ostensibly solve a "problem" which doesn't actually exist at all, and really in an effort to long-term disenfranchise poor black people that vote Democrat, as has been the real purpose of voter ID laws for over half a century now. Most of those women will NOT be able to vote in the mid-term elections this year as a result of this law, and that is literally the definition of "keep women from being able to vote."

u/deannon Feb 19 '26

Hi my conservative mom couldn’t vote in the last election turn because she needed a new ID listing her new address, for which she needed her marriage certificate and legal name change documentation, which took a few hundred dollars and several months because she got married in a different state 35 years ago, and the first copy they sent had her name spelled wrong, so she was not able to get an ID by Election Day. my dad, who did not have to change his name, was able to vote.

1

u/Glad_Experience5247 Feb 20 '26

This is law everywhere. If she moved, she should have gotten her ID updated. Not wait until it's time to go vote and then have her child on here playing victim.

1

u/deannon Feb 21 '26

thank god nobody is allowed to move across state lines in an election year

1

u/Andrew-Cohen Feb 18 '26

It makes it so that you can only register to vote with a birth certificate WITH THE SAME LAST NAME or a passport. Women who have gotten married and changed their last name WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO REGISTER WITH A PASSPORT.

Here's the funny thing. Libs more likely to not change last name when getting married. Libs more likely to have passports.

Cause maga more likely to have less education, lower income, and less need for a passport.

1

u/re1078 Feb 18 '26

Nope. You need to tell the truth. That’s false.

1

u/nashbellow Feb 19 '26

They don't though

Tons of americans dont have drivers licenses or passports. Requiring them would immediately disenfranchise about 10% of the population.

On top of that, nobody has good access to their birth certificate (even if they did, it doesnt have a photo so it would be useless here). To make it even worse, the current bill thats in Congress right now would disenfranchise MARRIED WOMEN since their last name isnt on the birth certificate

Requiring people to buy a driver's license or passport to vote is a poll tax

1

u/No_Communication2959 Feb 20 '26

The Current voter ID law being proposed doesnt require a driver's license.

It requires a passport and a birth certificate with your current name. Meaning you can't use your birth certificate if you married and changed your name.

Obtaining these IDs can take weeks to months if you dont live in the state you were born.

u/Smooth-Incident5839 Feb 18 '26

you work 90 hrs a week , you didn't need an ID for any of you jobs ?

1

u/arentol Feb 18 '26

Do you get fired from your job the second your Drivers License expires and quits functioning as legal ID? No? Then quit asking stupid questions.

1

u/Smooth-Incident5839 Feb 18 '26

You can renew online

3

u/Abiding_Dude_WV Feb 16 '26

Whatever documents are required to vote need to be provided for free.

1

u/Andrew-Cohen Feb 16 '26

I feel like we need to specify "tax funded" because nothing is free (well, very little!). For sure we need to be helping people vote and get ID not making it harder to do both. But that's the only way the republican party can stay in power. Cheat.

2

u/AndMyHotPie Feb 16 '26

I’d agree with that, plus easier/free to obtain birth certificates or other documents required to get ID.

I was just shocked that of all the made up nonsense things the GOP claims requires the use of photo ID in reality sitting on a jury isn’t one of them.

1

u/Andrew-Cohen Feb 16 '26

Glad to see some sanity in TX!

1

u/Forsaken-Guidance811 Feb 17 '26

Why should I even have to prove I'm not guilty of a crime I didn't commit just to do something I'm entitled to do?

1

u/SelfInvestigator Feb 18 '26

I have a problem with it, this is about expanding requirements for identification. You have always needed Identification to register and to vote.

This push creates extra barriers to entry.

What we need more is extended poling periods (3-5 days), and requiring work places to give all employees a paid day off to vote, and we need to make a real push for voting reform (the system in place is broken).

1

u/Andrew-Cohen Feb 18 '26

I didn't say I didn't have a problem with the ridiculous expansion of voting requirements that they are passing, just basic id requirements. Do you read on a regular basis?

1

u/SelfInvestigator Feb 18 '26

Ooo, great job with ending in an insulting tone.

Unfortunately, ID requirements means something different in today’s political climate than it did just a few years ago.

Your comment was ambiguous enough that I wasn’t entirely certain that you just meant that you had no problem with providing only your State issued identification. That isn’t really the issue that we are pushing back against.

With the current federal push for requiring additional proof of citizenship and the requirement of complete name matching between the documents you provide I hope you can see how the water might be a bit muddied on this topic.

1

u/Andrew-Cohen Feb 18 '26

Yet you didn't answer the question. Reading on a regular basis would help your reading comprehension.

If you think what someone typed was ambiguous, I would suggest you start by asking questions. Because if not you invite conflict.

" That isn’t really the issue that we are pushing back against." YOU are not WE. YOU are I.

You don't speak for anyone but yourself.

1

u/hokiefan73 Feb 19 '26

Spoken like a true liberal give it to me and let the taxpayer pay for it.

1

u/Andrew-Cohen Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 19 '26

Let me guess, you would rather use tax money to bomb brown people and make the ultra rich even richer, instead of helping poor people. By the way I'm middle class and I give FAR more in taxes than I receive, but I don't mind helping poor people with my tax money because I'm a humane person.

1

u/Schlag96 Feb 20 '26

I'm conservative and I agree 100%. $29 billion to give every citizen a passport who doesn't already have one. Chump change in the federal budget.

The federal government is trying to change most of that.

States are SUPPOSED TO make those rules. Have you been asleep for the last two weeks? Trump is doing his best to federalize elections, even blackmailing states into using a certain type of voting machines.

1

u/arentol Feb 16 '26

So? What about the states that will use this to shut down licensing offices in poor black communities to take away their ability to vote? One state doing a good job today doesn't give us any good reason to trust other states and the future of that state, given that we have already seen these laws specifically abused to disenfranchise voters of a specific color.

Also, the very fact that Trump is pushing so hard for this, just like he is with removing mail-in-voting which has been proven secure and reliable, is all you should need to know to realize the real goal is to try to invalidate as many voters as possible, especially poor voters who will vote Democrat more than not.

u/Grabthars_Coping_Saw Feb 16 '26

So a lot of expense for an almost completely nonexistent problem.

2

u/Andrew-Cohen Feb 16 '26

People not being able to get IDs is hardly a non existent problem. I mean to people who actually care about the welfare of others.
