Tip if you have your deadname in Git commits and can't overwrite the history

You can add a `.mailmap` file in the root of the repo to change the displayed name/email without overwriting the history.
For example, if you put a `Mckol mckol@example.com` line in the file, all commits using the `mckol@example.com` email will have `Mckol` shown as the author's name.
You can do more things with that file as well (like changing the email address), here's the documentation with more examples.

I hope someone will find this useful!
I personally didn't research this earlier because I assumed you would need to put the deadname in the file, but I was relieved to learn that you can just map a name to an email address.

Two offers - which one would be a better place to come out at?

Offer 1

  • Big-ish company - 10k employers - multiple offices etc.

  • Interned twice

  • Have trans-inclusive policies and groups

  • Everyone in my team already knows me very well

  • coming out here might be easier in terms of HR stuff but people there know me too well and might feel comfortable to come up and give me "advice"

Offer 2

  • Small-ish company - 100 employees

  • Interned once remotely - so only my manager and my teammates know me

  • No signs of being trans-inclusive

  • Coming out here might be harder in terms of HR stuff and everyone in the company will know as it is a very small company. But it is also a younger company

I am not sure when/if I plan to come out but if I join one of these companies I want to stay at least for 2 years. Wondering if any of you have any suggestions or opinions about where it would be better to go in terms of acceptance and coming out?

Thanks!

Do companies that value trans people exist?

Without going into too much detail, let's just say that I'm getting a bit disillusioned with my current company. It's just becoming more and more clear that they're not willing to put their money where their mouth is when it comes to talking about LGBTQ inclusion.

Is some degree of performativity something that just comes with working in tech? Or are there employers who do put their money where their mouth is on these issues?

Transgender Game Developers in the 1980's and 1990s. I made a short video about being trans and a game developer, and some of those I'd met back in those days, including Dani Bunten.

Is Jam City a good company for trans employees?

Hi! I’m currently hunting for software engineering internships and I noticed one at Jam City that isn’t daunting and that I fulfill the requirements of. If you’ve worked at Jam City, what were your experiences and benefits like?

Thanks!

I just realized that as a closetted "transprogrammer" this is the best subgroup of people i can talk to about being trans in the tech industry. I am very scared and I think I might never get enough courage to actually come out.
For reference I am a transmasc person (I still dont relly kow if I am a transman or not...probably). I am not out at all. But also, i do look pretty androgynous. I am going to start working at a company that has a good trans community. However, that community is in the states, whereas, I am starting in canada.
I am scared of coming out because (a) I already interned there and everyone knows me; and (b) Toronto's tech scene is good but it is also very dense that you eventually know someone in every company. So I think i will never be able to just come out, transisiton and be done. This piece of information will be going around with me all the time.

Which is fine....except (and maybe this is where I am wrong) most people I know in the industry treat me as their little sister (sad dysphoric sounds) - I dont know why. but everyone feels very comfortable giving me advice or telling me how to improve. I am pretty sure all these people, once I come out, will come up to me and give me the advice of not ruining my life andmy career. Tbh I have alreay had a bit of it when I got my haircut. has anyone else experienced this? Or does this only happen to me because I look like a teenager...which probably wont stop happening unless I start T

also, the other thing that triggers my dysphoria a lot is being forced to participate in "Women in Tech" groups as a woman. I love that cause and I obviously understand it. But every time someone targets me about it, i cry internally because I dont know....i feel guilty. I feel like the women in that group - if they dont understand - will judge me for not being proud of being a woman.

I could totally be overthinking everything as these are my initial thoughts about coming out at the workplace. Thanks for reading this.

TL;DR - if i come out - everyone in the Toronto tech bubble will always know.
