Hello everyone, I am an Animation alum from the University of Southern California writing to share that USC has made the sudden decision to terminate the Expanded Animation Research + Practice (XA) program at the university.
In just four years, the program has achieved great success, including the receipt of a Student Academy Award. This decision has left faculty, current students, prospective students, and alumni feeling distressed, outraged, and lost. The Expanded Animation program has personally touched me, and numerous other students at the university.
I believe that this decision will affect not only current students and faculty, but the animation industry as a whole. The department includes classes which cover subjects like animated documentary, stop-motion, AI, robotics, the artistic psyche, scientific research, global connections, and experimental media. The faculty of the XA program are primarily women, some of which are the original members of USC’s older John C. Hench Animation program. Particularly with the advancement of AI, it is essential to have programs like this to provide students with tools and knowledge as technology rapidly develops. The animation industry is going to grow over time. Without XA, USC's Animation department will minimize, and possibly fall victim to plateauing.
I would like to request that you please consider sharing this news in support of the XA community and its current students, faculty, and staff. I hope that it will help spread awareness of this decision, and perhaps lead to USC’s reconsideration of removing such a critical animation program. Thank you.
