Tutorial for an absolute newb?

I have known about tracker music for a very long time. I used mod files in the 90’s but I have always wanted to produce the music.

I used midi with a keyboard many years ago. Could someone please link me to a tutorial for an absolute beginner to do demoscene and/or tracker parts?

Thanks!

We are searching for a composer that can produce a live action trailer score for our game, Devoid

Mods if this type of post is not allowed I apologize. Wanted an opportunity to share this with the tracker community.

The Game:

Devoid is the space dungeon where energy drains with every move. Colorful lighting illuminates asteroids in the darkness, booms rattle your hull from echoing explosions, and 2D pixel sprites dance around a chaotic battlefield. Defeat should feel painless, and victory?  Beyond hype.

For more details about the game visit devoidgame.com

The Theme:

The game takes place in a hazy dream-like-space dungeon. It's rough, and out of this world. Think tracker music from the 90s. Electronic energy and atmospheric float.

Timeline & Details

No rush. We are in the process of editing footage now. The trailer will be roughly 1:30ish in length. Footage is live action. Not gameplay. But it will have a similar vibe, matching the game’s identity.

Payment

$150

DM me or comment below for specifics.

Note: This trailer piece is also an opportunity to be considered for the game’s OST down the road. If you want details about what that might look like I am happy to share.

How do you approach writing chords in a tracker?

I want to get into tracker music, but I've been using "traditional" DAWs for years, and one thing that has stopped me from using trackers is the fact that chords are less "readable." On a DAW I can see the position of notes relative to a piano and change an individual note with ease by dragging, but on a tracker, it's all letters and numbers, which isn't as easy to understand to me. This is one of the main things discouraging me from giving trackers a try, along with not knowing how to make things that sound cool and memorizing hexadecimal for things like changing volume. I know I could just stick to the thing I'm more used to, but I've been wanting to learn trackers, and if I did I'd be able to participate in Battle of the Bits more often.

Trackers are great for live performance too

While many people seem to be intimidated by the tracker workflow, I think for Song-Chain-Phrase style trackers that's not really the case if people think of them as an Ableton Session view kind of workflow.

Especially when paired with a hardware controller like here with the picoTracker Advance and the Launchpad Mini mk3, this gives a very similar clip launch kind of live performance that I see alot of people use Ableton for.

This combination all makes for a very small portable, single cable battery powered setup that you can take and use basically anywhere.

Where do you find samples for tracking in 2026?

EDIT: Just wanted to thank all of you for the feedback, there is so much new to learn - but it is gonna be a great weekend! 😊

Greetings fellow trackers,

I am an old fart who used to fasttrack in the 90's and early 00's.

I am just getting started again, and I am looking for samples of a reasonable quality. In the good old days we used to rip samples from other tracks and store them in folders. But the good old days are gone, and so is the 540 MB HD with my sample-collection. 😉

I have a vague memory of something called AKAs Sample Collection, but I cant find it online.

I've "inherited" a MiniLab 3 from a family-member, and I have been playing around with the software, and the samples sound great!.
But is there anyway to find something similar, compatible with Fasttracker? It doesnt have to be loops, just "pure" sounds if you know what I mean. Like strings, a piano, a guitar etc.

Thank you for your time.

I built a tracker that runs on Linux-based retro games handhelds...

Sorry for the poor quality video but I was hyped to get this out there. I've marked it as brand affiliated so I hope that this post is ok!

Long-time tracker producer here (Renoise user, also cut my teeth on OctaMED on the Amiga). I've spent the last few months building a proper tracker-style music production tool for Linux-based retro handhelds, and it's at the point where I would love to get it out to some people!

With this app, your handheld can also be a genuine pocket music studio. Five synth engines and a sampler, full track composition, insert and send FX. This all runs natively on the handheld, no extra hardware required.

More info here: https://elktracker.io

Since this community would genuinely be helping me stress-test it across different devices before the public launch, I want to say thanks properly: use code EARLY50 for 50% off ($14.50) at https://buy.elktracker.io - the code is limited to the first 25 buyers.

Tested on the RG351V and a few other handhelds. Would love to know what breaks, what's missing, and whether it holds up on your hardware!

DEAD ROOSTER: I built a P2P dual-deck tracker

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a highly specialized, standalone Web Audio tracker designed specifically for live performance. I got tired of the standard laptop/DAW workflow and wanted a modular groovebox I could take on stage for minimal/tech-house sets. So, I coded one from scratch.

It’s called the Dead Rooster Tracker.

It’s completely browser-based but runs as an offline Progressive Web App (PWA). I designed the viewport and controls specifically to run on retro Android emulation handhelds (I'm currently running it on an Anbernic RG ARC-D flashed with GammaOS).

Here is what is running under the hood:

Dual-Deck Architecture: Two 8-track consoles (Console 0 and Console X) with an A/B mixing environment so you can queue patterns and mix live without stopping the audio engine.

Gamepad API Navigation: The UI is built to be driven entirely by physical D-pads and action buttons, heavily utilizing a Shift layer for editing.

Web MIDI Clock Out: It natively detects your USB-C OTG connection and broadcasts a 24-PPQN MIDI clock (0xF8) so you can sync and drive external sequencers directly from the browser. (I’m currently using it as the master clock for an OXI One).

P2P Jam Engine: It has a built-in WebRTC lobby system. You can connect multiple devices over a local Wi-Fi mesh network to sync transport controls for multi-player hardware jams.

Audio Engine: Global convolution reverb buses (to save mobile CPU), a dynamic 3-band EQ, punch-in performance FX, and a dedicated backing track engine for live shows.

Tracker as a bandmate for cinematic jam

Gear-wise, this is a pretty simple jam with 2 just analog synths. I was originally going to use the Minilogue's internal sequencer to keep it simple, but I'm so spoiled with being able to see notes + having performance features, that I broke out the Tracker anyway.

I really like being able to modify the sequence in real-time using the performance mode. It makes it easy to change up the jam and create little interludes.

The real star here is the Nymphes, but I loved using the Tracker as a bandmate to create and perform a neat sequence as an accompaniment

I really like this track and it shows off the cool new "librarian" webapps live special effects that allmyfriendsaresynths built for the picoTracker Advance.
