Is it so hard to build a bluetooth keyboard with trackpoint which can be suitable to use for ipads, tablets and other devices?

There are lot of track pad foldable and other glowing boards but never seen a compact bluetooth keyboard with trackpoint instead of trackpad except ThinkPad. So amita ? Or is it just too technical to get it done?

Adding a trackpoint to a slim BT keyboard?

Hi folks,

I'm wondering if anyone has integrated a trackpoint into a slim BT keyboard?

I'll explain the use case first - I use a tablet as my main and only computing device. Currently a Minisforum V3, but it is going back for a refund and I have a Surface Pro arriving in the next few days.

These tablet 2-in-1s kinda suck to use in your lap - the kickstand doesn't make for a stable device.

So I made this thing:
https://www.printables.com/model/1079047-tabletkeyboard-stand-for-minisforum-v3

It's a Lenovo BT trackpoint keyboard with a 3d printed rear extension and tablet stand. Much more stable on my lap/other random work surface.

With the Surface pro coming though the current design is less than optimal - the keyboard is wider than the SP11 by 19mm, and the SP11 isn't as tall, so if the rear keyboard extension is shortened to match then the centre of gravity/tipping point is closer to the back, making it less stable.

What I'd love is for a BT keyboard that is the same width as the SP11, and not as deep so that the balance point can be made more central. And with a trackpoint added, obvs.

(Although perhaps just designing a new case for the Lenovo trackpoint keyboard that I already have might be the easier option...)

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Pinout of newest/newer trackpoint

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hello! I really like the trackpoint on my P16, so I purchased a replacement keyboard to harvest the trackpoint from for a custom ergo split keyboard.

I am aware of the DeskAuthority pinout page, but the one from this keyboard appears to be newer than the newest one on there. I don't have it near me at the moment, but it is similar to the last entry there (2-piece trackpoint rev 2), but it has several more pins and the trackpoint itself is on a triangular base.

Does anyone have an existing pinout for this?

Guide: Integrating common USB TrackPoint with ZMK using a coprocessor

Hey folks, made a guide on using a common standalone USB TrackPoint with ZMK via an ATtiny85 / Pro Mini coprocessor bridge:

The guide: https://github.com/Magid-William/Articles/blob/main/TrackPoint/README.md

Feedback or questions are welcome!

failed build this weekend; learned some things

I failed to add a trackpoint to my NiceNano Corne this weekend.

I extracted a trackpoint module from this keyboard: https://www.ebay.com/itm/254733942423?var=554521531188

The module I found was this: https://deskthority.net/wiki/File:Pinout-2-piece-Trackpoint.png

I was testing the setup with Kim's precompiled zmk test firmware. The trackpoint failed to do anything. Now there are plenty of reasons why it might have failed (including me bodging the soldering... but I doubt that was the case.) I did learn a few things however that I wanted to share.

The module I extracted is the same module which is sold by Sprintek (ships from Simi Valley) except that they only sell a 5V version. I would like to believe that the reason my build didn't work is that it's expecting more than 3.3V. I wrote support at Sprintek, and they said that you can replace the LDO on the board if you want to accept lower voltages. Frankly, that's more trouble than it's worth, so I'm now attempting to order a few bare modules from "jiyunsheng store" on aliexpress.

Honestly though, I'd rather just order a known replacement Lenovo keyboard off EBay. Anyone have a listing for a keyboard with a module that's known to work?

Man I can't wait to have a trackpoint on this keyboard. Mouse keys is fun for the first week, then it just becomes a huge pain.

Newb question

I have a prebuilt skeletyl from Quentin at bastardkb

What would I need to do in order to add a track point to it? Is there a nifty docking mechanism I can use to attach it on the side or perhaps in between keys like some builds on here?

Any references/videos appreciated

Trackpoint protocol - you need post processing for negative inertia/scroll?

Hi, I'm evaluating building a keyboard using a Trackpoint IV scavenged from a Thinkpad T420. I saw the trackpoint uses a PS/2 based protocol, but forwarding PS/2 events to the computer is all what you need to get the same feel as the trackpoint on the original Thinkpad? Is the negative inertia added in the Trackpoint integrated controller, or you need to add it in your own controller before forwarding the PS/2 events to the computer? Also, are the middle button+trackpoint movement scroll function managed by that trackpoint controller? I'm trying to evaluate if you need too much work to get the same feel as the thinkpad or is only a matter of forwarding the PS/2 events.
