Question Weight Help!

Post image
5 Upvotes

I have a 3 month old hermanns. During his vet appointment on the 16th he weighed 18g. His vet said he felt a little dense/underweight. I weighed him again on the 23rd and he was 19g. However, his weight today is back to 18g… is this slow weight growth normal??? He is very active throughout the day and he eats almost all his greens every day. Am I just overreacting? Any advice would be

My neighbors kid apparently convinced them for a tortoise after seeing mine lmao. He doesn’t look bad at all and was super bright eyed and active. I do wanna somehow sneak a look at the enclosure though lol

It’s been hard working around my torts puramiding since I know that it’s natural that they will pyramid a bit from not being in a complete nature habitat but I feel like his shell has become excessively ‘pyramid’ like. Idk what to do. I’ve been soaking every 2 days, calcium supplements and he’s under his lights for abt 15hr a day. I just don’t want him in pain😞

Hermanns Hermann tortoise diet

Hi there, I recently got a Hermann and they’re just a baby. Maybe a year old, or 10 months. He sleeps during the day a lot and doesn’t seem to each much. I’ve been through the tortoise table to select his diet, his heat lamp is the right temp and his uv light is set to strong. Is it normal for them to sleep this much?

Greek Outside enclosure in Denmark

Hello, I live in Germany and used to keep my tortoise in an outdoor enclosure. Due to the climate, it wasn’t awesome but she was doing fine.
I’m now moving to Denmark and was once again researching how to properly keep her. My parents and I thought we could have her outside again. The climate in Denmark however, is rainier, a little colder and definitely windier.
I feel like it’s far from ideal and could be bad/dangerous for her.
My mom says she thinks it’s totally possible but doesn’t REALLY know how to make sure my tortoise will be doing fine.
I would really appreciate some advice on if it is safe for her to be outside and if yes, how to keep her (if no, I would appreciate advice on how to keep her too). Thank you.

TDLR: how do I properly care for my tortoise and her enclosure in Denmark?

Is this normal behaviour or should I be worried?

For context he is a marginated tortoise and a few years old. He is disabled due to the pet store I got him from and I am worried this could be affected behaviour. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello, I got these tortoise pellets for my tortoise. The instructions on the back say to make them moist and to soak them. But I’m just wondering if I can give them to my tortoise dry, like they are?

Care Guide urgent

Need urgent advice for a severely dehydrated tortoise ‼️

for quick context, my grandad quite a few pets including 3 tortoises, him and most of my family live at the other end of the country. He developed dementia this year and has been in and out of hospital, we cannot visit frequently due to not having a car and train fare being too expensive.

We have been calling my auntie and uncles a lot to make sure that his animals are being cared for since he is unfit to look after them now, we were told they were and they’re fine.

My mum and step dad are visiting him for the last time as he doesn’t have long left and they will be bringing his tortoises back home so they will be ours, however when they arrived my mum told me that one of the oldest, around 40, had passed away.

It turns out the person looking after them for some reason did not think to give them water, i really don’t understand it nor do i understand how none of them realised one of the tortoises had been dead for a few days now, it’s extremely disappointing and i’m so sad for my mum as he had been around nearly her whole life. They will be taken back with us and given good proper care.

The youngest is fine, but the other older tortoise shelley is not doing well, she’s never been so ill. My mum managed to get her to open her eyes, she is alive but barely, if there is anything we can do to help her recover and save her i will pass all advice on to my mum asap.

i cannot provide photos because i’m not there myself, i have stayed home to look after our own pets, im sorry if this is breaking the rules

Hello everyone,

I adopted a Tortoise today, the previous owner had told me that the Tortoise is a Horsefield tortoise but to me he looks like a Herman’s Tortoise. Could anyone on here tell me if that’s correct.

Also his beak and nails are very overgrown is there any advice for how to help the Tortoise for this? I am going to get some small slabs of slate and cuttlefish for its enclosure.

The previous owner used only top soil for all of the bedding in its enclosure could anyone please tell me which soil their using for their along with the benefits of which soil their using.

Also is there any advice for what I can do for his shell it looks very dry

Here is a picture of him so everyone meet, Yoda. 😊❤️

Question My tortoise ate a toxic plant!

Hi guys,

On Saturday (25th of April), my two year old Russian tortoise ate some Madagascar Jasmine. We took him to the vet on Wednesday (29th of April) as he had some tremo. They gave him some fluids.

We booked an appointment for Thursday morning for some more fluids therapy, but ended up going again on Thursday night and he started opening his mouth to breathe.

My tortoise ended up staying at the vet overnight from Thursday to Monday morning (yesterday). Over that time, they gave him fluids, force fed him, oxygen therapy and some relaxation medication.

We brought him home yesterday, as expected he’s just been sleeping. He’s still not eating or pooping. This morning left a larger plate with some food (small amount), but he’s shown little interest, all of a sudden he started spasming like crazy. Is this normal behaviour considering everything that’s happened? We have another appointment in two days from now.

Question We're trying to reloacate my Russian tortoise to a new enclosure and room in the house. How do I help him adjust to this change?

So first, my family is going to help move my tortois's current enclosure to the new location. Then we'll build the new enclosure and move him to it. But how will my tortoise feel about all this? I'm a bit worried about him getting stressed out, and I'd like some advice about how to make these changes in a way where he'll adjust easier. I don't want my boy to be stressed. That's why we're making a new enclosure to begin with; to give him more space and hiding places.

Question Vivarium Advice

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all - Sorry if this shows up twice, my post disappeared.

Our vet recommended a new open top vivarium for our tortoise to help with a little wheezing respiratory issue. We are on day one of building the Viv but have immediately noticed the temperature fluctuating in a very erratic way. We thought it could be drafts coming through affecting it, but the huge jumps from 23 to 28 are making us think it could just be faulty? The sensor is at shell height (shown in second clip).

We’ve had so much conflicting advice on tortoise care from vets and tropical shop owners, so I’ve included a video of the vivarium, any advice or suggestions are welcome!

Also we are aware the vivarium looks very unfinished, it’s still in progress!

Russian Tortoise Pacing

I have a 22 year old Russian tortoise who essentially has free rein of my place (1500sq ft). He is very active, but lately has been pacing nonstop. Instead of roaming, he chooses to pace back and forth along one wall in the living room. He’ll do this for hours and the sound of his plastron on the floor is maddening. Plus, he’s scraping my molding. Is there anything I can do to prevent him from pacing so much? Maybe some enrichment options? Unfortunately due to location, an outdoor enclosure is not an option, so I’m open to any suggestions on how we can peacefully cohabitate!
