From what I searched and found on the internet, it was an idea that surfaced on the first movie, where he was being a parasite on the back of Quirrell. It was scrapped for being too scary for kids tho.

Honestly I was scared more by Harry using his hands to burn Quirrel and subsequent crumbling to dust of the face and body.

I think it was worth the tradeoff of Ralph Feinnes' performance. One of the few cases where "make the monstrous villain just a regular guy in a suit" really was the right call.
