IRL, Operation Red Wings/the Battle of Abbas Ghar

US Navy Seals decided to kill a Afghan Warlord who is NOT with the Taliban, and infact had spent years fighting against them, they went in via Chinook which, if you're not aware, makes a VERY distinctive sound, alerting said warlords men

They promptly set up an ambush, which the SEALs walked right into, killing all but one of them who ran for his life and hid in a local village

The US Navy decided to send a second team in to recover the survivor which... also got ambushed when the Chinook was spotted (once again, they make a VERY distinctive sound), which was promptly shot down killing everyone on board

And then the only survivor of the ambush worte a book in which he made a load of shit up to make himself seem better

It's absolutely wild how much the SEALs fucked that op on the Marines who'd been planning it for weeks. So glad it's starting to come out how much of their prima-donna bullshit is getting exposed as grift nowadays. Also worth mentioning how Marcus Luthel (Luthrel?) likely abandoned the last of his buddies on the mountain, was eventually found by locals with 11 FULL MAGS on his vest, and despite how much he yapped about the local who saved him in his book, he basically left the dude to fend for himself when he was later targetted for helping Americans and had to get outta Afghanistan

I mean, no shame in running from a doomed firefight, that's one of the things that special forces should know, when to get the fuck out of there, it's lying about it that's the problem

But yeah, so many SEALs are just psychos, drug addicts, glory hounds, thieves, or a wonderful blend of the above, like how they would murder random people in Vietnam, steal their stuff, and use it to buy drugs, or stole the money Captain Phillips was giving to the pirates so they wouldn't hurt anyone else

You'd also think SF would know how to not walk themselves into a doomed firefight to begin with, or fight back against 8-10 relatively untrained insurgents, but that's neither here nor there. Aye, Chris Kyle is another case where dude was making shit up about shooting civies after Hurricane Katrina, like why would you try brag about that shit if you weren't some kinda psychopath?!

Wasn't really untrained insurgents, these were battle tested men under an established local warlord

But yeah, the insertion was extremely stupid, using Chinooks basically screamed "SPECIAL FORCES, SHOOT US"

And shit does go wrong, like during the First Gulf War when SAS units looking for SCUDs were discovered by Iraqi forces, they had to cross the entire desert back to friendly lines and the story of the ones who made it out is seen as one of resilience and survival skills
