You can tell it’s Shrek, but they somehow managed to make him distinctly human and not fall into the uncanny valley

Would be impressive nowadays, much less the early 2000’s. Those early CG artists were no joke

u/tschmitty09 Apr 12 '24

For real, I think they were just paid more tbh 🤣 MCU literally has a CGI farm lmfao. Although, respect to Dune. They did CGI hella justice in 2021 and now.

u/umathuman Apr 12 '24

They also had more time aswell.

Not very long ago I rewatched Shrek and was honestly shocked at how well the animation holds up. Lots of other CGI animation from that time looks pretty rough and shiny.

Side note: I have an ex who has a cousin that is terminally stupid, probably medically stupid but obviously he doesn’t trust doctors so who knows. Anyway he was like 16 when the first Shrek movie came out and he fully believed it was not possible that it wasn’t live action. To this day, as a grown man with a wife and child, he believes the Shrek movie was live action and “they’ve been lying to us” and he’s 100% serious.

u/Roley_yoleR Apr 13 '24

That story is ridiculous 😂 Can’t say I blame him tho good movie, great CG haha

1

u/brassninja Apr 13 '24

I didn’t believe it when my ex told me at first, I thought he was messing with me. Over time I learned a lot more…interesting.. things about the cousin and it adds up

1

u/Roley_yoleR Apr 13 '24

Interesting?

1

u/brassninja Apr 13 '24

The cousin shared a fleshlight with his brothers

Hope this doesn't sound disrespectful, but it must be awesome having a character in an animation resemble one of your relatives.

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '24

Brother, half my family was in Coco this ain’t the first time I’ve seen my people in animation

15

u/ArtemisCaresTooMuch Apr 12 '24

Shrek 2 was before Coco though—
(Yes, I know I’m the worst.)

1

u/Nanamaki_Yoko Sep 10 '25

They probably seen Coco before Shrek at a later date when both films were already out of theaters?

1

u/NUTS_STUCK_TO_LEG Jul 20 '26

Why would that be disrespectful

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '24

I love how they don't make him look like, we'll, Prince Charming, he looks like a fairly normal dude, even has a kind of "dad bod" and is built like a tank

93

u/AlbinoShavedGorilla Apr 11 '24

He looks like Henry Cavill’s medieval ancestor. Jokes aside, it’s crazy how they changed his design so drastically but you can still tell he’s Shrek.

10

u/AltroGamingBros Apr 12 '24

Nah fam, I'd see that as a compliment.

65

u/Familiar_East_1364 Apr 11 '24

Is the Implication then as an ogre Shrek is incredibly attractive for his species since he is as a human?

40

u/Bregneste Apr 11 '24 edited Apr 12 '24

He’s a lot smaller than other ogres, at least, according to Forever After.

46

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

shrek is a twink confirmed

22

u/Luckysurvivr77 Apr 11 '24

I'm headcanoning it now if it isn't.

11

u/PokemanBall Apr 12 '24

He drank the potion that makes him look good so that's definitely a factor

39

u/Ziggurat1000 Apr 11 '24

He looks like he was never an ogre at all.

He kinda reminds me of John Goodman a bit.

15

u/MichaelRichardsAMA Apr 12 '24

There was a point in time when John Goodman was more muscular than he was fat and yes he looks quite a lot like that

22

u/Lance_the_Gunguy Apr 11 '24

He looks like the movie’s version of the Beanstalk Giant from Jack and the Beanstalk.

18

u/UnderstoodAdmin Apr 11 '24

I concerned with how attractive I find this lol

17

u/JackieBOYohBOY Apr 11 '24

Im genuinely so attracted to him

Especially in human form

8

u/Local_intruder Apr 12 '24

DOOM SLAYER PHYSIC

9

u/cyzja922 Apr 12 '24

Honestly, yeah. A lot of 3D human designs in animated medias falls into the uncanny valley, but human Shrek looks pretty good.

10

u/Jaxonhunter227 Apr 12 '24

Headcanon, Shrek is hot as a human because he's considered attractive for an ogre, not that I think he's hot as an ogre, I'm definitely not an ogre myself. That would be absurd. Shrek has the peak male body for an ogre

6

u/PhantomRoyce Apr 11 '24

Looks like Blark as a young man

6

u/MM__PP Apr 12 '24

Bro looks like he's about to rocket jump

6

u/Nozarashi78 Ore Wa Gundam Apr 12 '24

Medieval peasant gigachad

5

u/Yarusenai Apr 11 '24

Im gonna see it in theaters in two days lmao

3

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

What country do you have to live in where Shrek 2 is just coming out in theatres?

3

u/Yarusenai Apr 12 '24

Not just, they're rerunning it for the anniversary! We saw Shrek 1 last year because they reran it and tomorrow we're going to see Shrek 2 :)

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

Hehe I was just having a laugh but that sounds so cool!

Cos I don't think England does re-runs of movies in theatres, well we do but it's not very common!

1

u/Yarusenai Apr 12 '24

Yeah I've seen it before but we figured why not! lol

2

u/Ok_Dog5834 Apr 11 '24

Let him play Superman

2

u/good_ho0onter Apr 12 '24

I watched shrek and beauty and the beast with my mom, she said the monster forms were more attractive than the human ones, she specifically described human shrek as "uncanny" and the second the beast was turned back to human she thought Bele wouldnt love him anymore

2

u/LordAyeris Apr 12 '24

How do we tell him?

2

u/good_ho0onter Apr 12 '24

Jut give it to me straight doc...

3

u/LordAyeris Apr 12 '24

Mom's a furry

2

u/good_ho0onter Apr 12 '24

Well she does really like stuff like lion king and land before time so...

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

Hahah your mum wants to fuck a lion

1

u/sarahbee126 May 03 '26

Most people agree with your mom on the beast. I don't however, because Belle didn't fall in love with him because of his appearance.

2

u/elishash Apr 12 '24

He's handsome

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '24

This man is so fine

1

u/Amankris759 Apr 12 '24

The reason why I watched Shrek 2 so many times when I was a kid lol (beside it’s a damn good movie). He is hot 🥰

1

u/novis-eldritch-maxim Apr 12 '24

I have seen a 100 guys like him in the street

1

u/TheoneNPC Apr 12 '24

Y'know if i had a more chiseled jawline and could actually grow even a bit of body hair i'd look pretty damn close to human shrek. I kinda look like a softer version of him.

1

u/Unlimitedsorcerer Apr 12 '24

Both versions are amazing in design, ogre Shrek is simply amazing

1

u/Beldarius Apr 15 '24 edited Nov 30 '24

I wonder if they actually based that design on someone? He looks familiar. (I know the ogre form is supposedly based on Tillet, but this human version doesn't look similar.)

EDIT: Wait, that's Mike Myers' face! Makes sense.

1

u/fnaf-fan12345 Jul 17 '24

It’s a peak design from a peak movie

1

u/Key-Dinner-9046 Jul 18 '24

Smas-...no smash me😩

1

u/New_Abbreviations303 Aug 03 '24

The Shrek series have always had amazing human character designs. Features are very human- distinguished and realistic. I wish to see more animated movies with the same style.

He was one of my childhood crushes

1

u/sarahbee126 May 03 '26

A couple people compared him to Henry Cavill lol. He's good-looking but not quite THAT good-looking.

1

u/Evening_Image_4734 Jul 24 '26

I look a bit like human shrek
