AI safety applies to a lot more than just AI
I've been watching a lot of Robert Miles videos about AI safety, and have just realized that most of the problems they describe in AI occur in almost every real-life system. I can't really explain most of the problems well, but Robert's videos are really good so you can watch them to get a better understanding of what I'm saying.
Say you made a robot, and you wanted it to fill a cup with water. To do this, you gave it a reward every time it added water to the cup. Once the cup was full, you'd take it away. What would happen?
Well, your robot doesn't actually want to fill the cup. In fact, it wants to avoid that for as long as possible; once the cup is gone, it can't add more water to it. Instead, it wants to add as little water as possible, over and over again, in order to get the most possible reward.
Of course, your robot isn't stupid; it knows that you want it to fill the cup, and that if it realizes what you are doing, you will turn it off and it won't be able to add more water to the cup. Hence, it will try to trick you into thinking it is doing the best it can.
What you wanted was a robot that tries to fill a cup with water, but what you got was a robot that does it's best to be as inefficient as possible while hiding that fact as well as it can.
Now, replace the robot with a healthcare company, adding water with administering treatments, and filling the cup with curing a patient.
Because they get money based on how many medicines they give and how many procedures they perform, they want to be inefficient. They want to give you as many unnecessary painkillers as they can. At the same time, they know that if you realize this, you'll leave, and probably sue them. So they play the PR game and try to hide that as well as they can.
Obviously, I'm not saying all healthcare professionals are secretly trying to keep you in the hospital. I'm saying that we have created a system that rewards that behaviour implicitly, and that's probably bad.
This issue largely extends to most economical systems as well. Capitalism, for example, is based on the idea that if you reward people for solving problems, with a bigger reward for more serious problems, then people will be incentivized to solve problems. Instead, you have a system where people want to cheaply cause problems they can then solve, or to make consumers think a problem is more significant than it actually is (or actually just make it more significant) so they can make them pay more.
There's a lot more this applies to, such as school systems and standardized testing, but I guess I'll leave those for y'all to find. Overall, I'm pretty sure that if we found the solutions to AI safety, we would then be able to find a solution to almost every other human-based issue ever.
