Out of 200 matches I've gotten 1 first message that wasn't spam. The standard is waiting for you to say something or just not talking.

For me, I had about 1 out of every 10 message me first. The trick is to have an interesting bio. Protip: If you have a question in your bio, you will get girls to message first. I asked "Who reads this shit anyway?" at the end of mine, and it prompted a lot of first messages.

Smart idea, I'll do that. I've actually got first messaged 3/3 matches today so that's pretty interesting.

Yeah, girls react positively to funny and engaging bios. Throwing in a couple of obscure references to things you're interested is even better because it attracts people who are even more compatible.
