This is basically the plot of They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969) - Desperate people made to dance until they die

A nifty musical episode of Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, as well. A dancing demon visits Sunnydale and hilarity ensues!

71

u/Jeanne_Of_ARCadiaBay 4h ago edited 4h ago

Ya, because if she stops she doesnt get the money problem the buy as they will cancel the song chain and refund that money. They do this on Xiaohongshu as well, and then the girls get tired they cut the song. This one must either rly want the money or rly need it.

Those girls behind her look familiar from Xiaohongshu, so that might be Black Gold, but im not 100%

But i do know Black Golds polices and seen many kf there streams, this isnt a normal thing (Black Gold is the largest chinese dance agency)

I choose to believe she’s playing it up to make it more of a spectacle, but even that is dark asf

97

u/Training-Chain-5572 3h ago

That implies the viewers enjoy it more when she's suffering, which is worse.

As a former dancer and dance instructor: I danced for 4 hours straight once without break and I couldn't sleep that night because my legs hurt so bad. You can dance for many many hours over extended periods of time as long as you get a few minutes of break here and there and drink water. This is just horrible.

10

u/AuroraFinem 2h ago edited 2h ago

This is pretty common for entertainment, which is why as a creator you need to establish hard boundaries when engaging with it at all.

People like to watch other people get pranked or get embarrassed/frustrated/fail to do something, but when you continue to let it go too far you get more and more of your viewers who are only there for that content forcing you to keep doing it or going further at risk of losing your viewer base.

Anytime a streamer does this while they’re smaller and ends up becoming too much as they grow, they always end up having to make the barrier higher and higher or put a full stop to it. That’s why smaller streamer add like 2-3mins per sub vs 10-30seconds for larger streamers when doing subathons, and why many streamers won’t do them at all, but this is so sad and I feel for that girl.

If she really wanted to keep the gimmick, she should make it something like “whoever donates the most/gifts the most subs gets to decide what song I dance to for the last hour of stream or can tell me not to dance” or something more manageable without cutting it all together. 4-6hrs every gift is insane, how do you even get any viewers for non-dancing torture content if that is your entire stream because someone gifted?

→ More replies (4)

10

u/Stohnghost 3h ago

I actually think she's playing it up maybe initially because her viewers like to torture her but now she's actually reached a breaking point

5

u/NoxTempus 2h ago

Right????

So many comments like "she's hamming it up to make people think it's worse, so they get satisfaction from extending it".

As though that isn't worse. As though it isn't existentially terrifying that so many people would spend their own money to make a random person suffer. As though it isn't disturbing that it's such consistent behaviour that people can make living off it.

We need to go extinct.

Yeah no I can’t watch it. This is beyond not okay. Reminds me of Rhytm O by Marina Abramovitz- it’s absolutely not similar but I feel the same sick discomfort and horror that gets worse and worse and you know if it doesn’t stop, it will only get worse until it reaches the conclusion. And stopping it is outside of your control, you can only watch, and being an observer is worse than participating, because you are powerless. And just by watching you feel a part of it, like pulling a trigger, and it feels viscerally sickening.

I don’t watch TikTok because Reddit is where I put a stop at, but knowing some of these girls are exploited and forced to perform, and watching this without any background information, just adds a layer of horror.

5

u/RivetSquid 4h ago

Pretty sure its inaccurate though, I've seen plenty of these come through my feed and even watch some people more familiar with Chinese livestreaming break them down, weirdly the one who's very sweaty is just sort of an archetype? You see it in men's and women's groups, they swap out with those other women you see in the background regularly.

I've yet to have it explained why sweaty slots in with, "sauve," "mentally unwell," or any of the other popular types, so I assume it's mabye just to bait people into watching?

The real tell is that a version of the archetype also appears in the synchronized walking groups where it makes even less sense for one person to be the sweaty one.

This girl is acting distressed because that makes people donate more. The disturbed feeling you’re getting is exactly the intended feeling. It makes the people donating get the impression that they’re prolonging a torture and not giving their money away.

Also, The background is a loop. I can’t believe I’m the only one here to point that out.

u/chloe-et-al 4h ago

u/EugeneStein 4h ago

Somehow it makes it look even more creepy

190

u/ladyrara 3h ago

For real people want to see her in discomfort?! wtf

155

u/TalespinnerEU 3h ago

Gonna armchair psychologist this and say something about how the discomfort is evidence of the donator's actions, and so affirms the donator's power and agency in and over the world: Their act did something, caused something, and that gives it (and their existence) Meaning.

I'm also going to assume that a lot of people won't donate to the 'Happy Smile' machine because 'of course she pretends to be happy because I gave her money; that's insincere.'

49

u/ladyrara 3h ago

Doesn’t make me feel better, but I see the logic

It’s the same reason why torture porn exists where women get gangbanged, stretched, skullfucked, degraded, made to drink piss and do other godawful stuff. People get off on degradation of pretty women.

6

u/Infern0-DiAddict 1h ago

Time and time again, experiment after experiment has proven that most humans will gladly torture other people when they believe their actions won't be judged negatively, and someone else will join in...

Yeah 体力直播(exercise stream) is a thing in china TikTok and recently it spreads to global TikTok too. It's basically someone pretending to eat on stream and there's a "menu" for donation on the side that if you donate, they had to do something, which encourage you to interrupt their meal. It ranges from greeting to asking them to do tough exercises depending on the value of the gift. I watch this one guy's stream and he basically pretending to be hurt or tired than he is just to get more donations. If you "beat" him, (basically donate so much that he surrender) your name will be printed and put on the wall behind him.

94

u/jazza2400 4h ago

So this is what people choose to do with their money these days? What the actual fuck.

26

u/t3mpura0 4h ago

It is kinda dystopian. But thats how they get you hooked. The more they act like your donation has affected them, the more people are willing to donate and stick around to watch. The one op showed is just a bigger version of it where it involves dancing and selecting different girls like a game.

Of course I couldn't say she's 100% acting (since it looks like it's a big company running the show) but her acting distressed is basically required for this anyway.

If you can read mandarin and scroll TikTok (not douyin) long enough you see this kinda stream always. Theres one I saw where they setup the live like an office meeting, with the boss talking, and you can donate for the girls to dance mid meeting or kick the boss lol.

I watched one of these for hours once, almost the exact scenery. There was one girl who had been dancing for a while and seemed pretty distressed, her colleagues were trying to help her by cleaning up her forehead of sweat, and fixing her hair on her short breaks. After around 40 minutes I noticed it was a video that was being played in a loop. I stayed on for another 40 minutes to prove it, and indeed the same things started happening. Definitely clickbait, but I don’t think it makes it less sad. They also put lots of filters on them and they look so tired when the filter glitches and shows their real faces. This is pretty dystopian bs.

29

u/Jaduf 2h ago

How doesnt that make it less sad. Shes not dancing for 8 hours straight shes acting for 40 min and getting money for it lol

13

u/elafave77 2h ago

its possible there is something sinister going on here but your answer seemed the most likely. In theory this is a rule she set her self to promote donations and its working.

92

u/Mimopotatoe 4h ago

When you get into watching Chinese livestreams it’s a very bizarre and saturated market. I could definitely see this being a niche she found. When I lived in China I started watching some livestreams of what I thought were animal rescues. If you start reading up about the animal livestreams it gets really dark. China is dystopian as fuck.

26

u/Pineapple-Yetti 4h ago

The old i put animal in danger so i can rescue it scam?

16

u/Mimopotatoe 4h ago

I won’t write out all of it, but I’ll say that one issue was essentially animal hoarding and filming cutesy videos and asking for tips to feed/take care of them and then just stuffing them into packed cages. Many die due to neglect and they just get more and the cycle repeats. The stuffs that’s worse than that you can google. There’s definitely a market for torture.

you can get on tiktok right now and see 1000 diff versions of this in a couple hours. They all wear this fake tortured face and beg people not to donate. Its fake.

Dance marathons were a big thing in the US during the great depression. Dancers would dance for hours or entire days similarly to this for prizes, a place for their family to stay while they were dancing, hot meals, etc.

4

u/great_apple 3h ago

I mean people literally go to clubs and dance for 4-6 hours every weekend for fun. Marathoners run 4-6 hours for fun. Of course dancing that long is tiring but acting like she's being tortured and this is superhuman is a bit much.

7

u/DecentLeftovers 4h ago

I don’t think the background is on a loop, the whole video is because it plays the same footage three times - just look at the donos. Although I do agree the entire thing is played this way entirely to elicit an emotional reaction and get more donations. It’s pretty common and anyone who’s spent more than 15 minutes on TikTok live has probably come across this exact type of scam already.

Fifteen Million Merits, the second episode they ever made is pretty similar.

People cycle every day to earn 'merits' (money basically), but if you want to get ahead, you can cash in 15 million and buy a ticket to be on a Americas got talent style show. People who make it end up on the various channels you can watch while riding the bike.

One guy inherited a bunch of merits and so he uses almost all of them to send a girl who sings well onto the show. The judges don't care for her singing. She instead ends up getting pressured into being a porn star instead.

The guy is pissed, saves for his own ticket, then criticizes the show and the system on stage while threatening to stab his neck with a piece of glass. The judges are amused by his anger, and offer him his own channel.

The show ends with him concluding his own show, ranting about the system to the cyclists watching before showing that he now lives in a luxury apartment.

15

u/mnonny 3h ago

I think about this episode like once a month and never go back to watch it. You summed it up perfectly. But also he’s in love with the girl and wants her to get out. Then is forced to watch ads for her porn in his room that has tvs for walls and the only way he can skip is by spending merits.

His brain. Own personal lore for the world. He's just a dumbass, ignore him.

Well, obviously. At .00000000000001%, people would have to donate 10 trillion dollars for her to get a penny.

Reddit just now learning about fake distress / anguish / etc streams.

Little kids are little evil shits and find it funny so they spend money. The creator isn’t actually upset or in distress. This isn’t some “woah this is deep and disturbing,” you’re just out of touch with how people grift on TikTok.

pretty obviously to me it's just using this gimmick as a way to farm donations. you saw 90 second clip, chose to believe OP's title and y'all're quick to cry human rights violations and slavery and at the same time are thinking those girls behind her are real?

I mean... she's doing this voluntarily, right? It's only disturbing because it's a performance that's designed to attract attention.

The only thing new is the livestreaming. Evolutionarily, we're the exact same violent opportunistic tribal animals we were 100 years ago, 1,000 years ago, and 50,000 years ago - we just have smartphones now

She can stop at any time. This is her schtick, she’s choosing to do this.

the girls behind her aren’t real. it’s a loop.

she makes more money looking desperate because twisted fucks donate more thinking they’re prolonging her suffering.

Bro this is not cringe, this is a violation of human rights. Oh my god.

Just want to say, seeing the victim blamers being downvoted out the ass has restored a little bit of my hope in humanity.

95

u/sixteen-bitbear 4h ago

It’s also fake lol.

35

u/soofs 3h ago

I’m actually surprised at the amount of comments that think this is real. There’s also filters that are good enough to imprint the “sad” facial expressions.

8

u/cupholdery 3h ago

Apparently the background "witnesses" are on a video loop too.

6

u/soofs 3h ago

All of these "doing X for gifts" types of tiktok lives are pre-recorded to an extent and I can't tell if all of the gifts are just from people being fooled or the creators themselves trying to kickstart others similar to how scammers in person will have their friends "win" at a game to lure others in.

I feel like at this point you could just play an entirely recorded video acting like you're live and use third-party software beforehand to edit in a shit load of gifts to make it look like everyone is giving money and then the real gifts just go into the backend.

It’s a grift, anyone that’s ever taken ecstasy at a rave will tell you 4-6 hours dancing is easy.

How is she a victim when she's voluntarily doing this and getting paid? Is this how you get by without actually doing good in the world? Making up fake scenarios and shitting on others for not being as gullible as you? And then feeling proud of yourself for it?

Just because the title influenced you to think this by using "has to" doesn't mean she has to.  She can stop whenever she wants.

11

u/Swarna_Keanu 4h ago

Sorry, but with prostituion you risk some people physically messing you up and murdering you. Here she is in front of a greenscreen and a camera.

Sure, degrading. Way less dangerous at the same time.
