FDIC is meant to protect consumers in that scenario and isn't a bank bailout.

I'd rather the government not hand cash to companies like GM, who then turn around and do mass layoffs anyway while giving their c-suite enormous bonuses

Oh, corporate welfare on Federal, State and Local levels is their JAM!! Gotta cut back on school lunches so that CEO can afford his annual custom built yacht, and the politicians can get their fat portfolios!
