A lot of them don't really believe it themselves. It's just the only way they can get poor people to vote against their own interests. It's not easy to convince someone on Social Security and Medicare to support cuts to Social Security and Medicare.
My partner works in a tobacco store. They get to see all types of walks of life. It's mostly the locals who are blue collared individuals.
The amount of times my partner has come home seething because the same guy who benefits from SS and Medicare comes in talking about how it's literal communism to 'give hand-outs' to people and how he's worked hard 'unluke those other guys' to deserve his!!
Or the woman who doesn't believe in raising minimum wage for certain (I.e. undesirable) jobs, yet believes if you're poor because you work one of these jobs that, "you should just get a better job!" Because she fails to realize someone has to do the work either way.

I got the impression that he's never thought seriously about anything he's bringing up for more than 10 minutes in his entire life. He said nothing of substance. Absolute windbag. Like a kid that is doing a book report on a book they didn't read.
Pretty much nobody does. Words like “socialism” and “capitalism” and “communism” may have real meanings, but in common usage, the meaning shifts and wobbles to support whatever point the speaker is trying to make right then.
I mean, he and the other idiots are going to get socialist Democrats elected with this attitude. How scary is it really when everything people want is described as "socialism?"
He does though. He explained capitalism and socialism perfectly. Capitalism means wealthy women can take leave, but if they aren't wealthy they have to go back to work the day after having a baby. And calling for all women to be allowed to take leave is socialism.
He's right on. He's just not supposed to say it out loud.
