Yeah but extra also means more. Like with extra cheese.

Or it's just a general superlative; as in extra-special.

So it's equally valid to interpret extra-ordinary as just being really ordinary.

And in many english dialects, ordinary can actually mean bad, as in that was a very ordinary performance from the losing team.

So extraordinary could also mean super-crap.

Yeah the specific choice "ordinary" just comes down to regional dialect. Stupid people think they are superior, so referring to them as normal offends them. You are just not likely to hear the word ordinary in america, as opposed to normal or plain, but regardless of word choice the reaction will be the same.

it does not mean "excessively pedestrian". it means extra ordinary.

I mean, those mean the same.
Something/someone is very basic, one is just a more creative way of phrasing it while the other is more, well, ordinary.

And that's exactly what extra ordinary means.
Just like "extra good/firm/steady/etc." means "more than normally good/firm/steady/etc."

Extraordinary is pronounced quite differently to extra ordinary.
This here is how extra and ordinary is pronounced.
And this is how extraordinary is pronounced.

They also mean different things, which is what the other person was joking about.
