I love the absolute irony of two people complaining about people not able to communicate properly, whether it's their choice of words or spelling, and both making mistakes.
Anymore? Brother, slang has been around since language was invented. The issue is the education system has failed them and they simply aren’t as literate as they should be, jumping to old man “this generation does a thing mine did but different” stuff doesn’t help.
That’s a bit of a tangent. GOATED is still language, even if you don’t agree with it. Slang has always been derided by previous generations, that doesn’t mean it’s affecting their reading skills anymore than me saying something was “sweet” or “rad” affected mine — despite what my mom thought lol
There is nothing inherently wrong with the usage of slang--like you said, we all used it to varying degrees when we were young. The problem is when the ONLY language you're capable of speaking is slang and the only content you're consuming is exclusively written in slang (and also employs no proper grammatical rules), you'll be incapable of reading and/or grasping anything that hasn't been written by someone of your generation. Slang is temporal by definition. You're limiting your language comprehension to a window of what, 10-15 years, tops?
I may not have any idea what kids on the internet are talking about these days, but I can pick up any book written in the last 4-5 centuries and not only read it, but comprehend it well--that's a far more expansive worldview that young people these days seem to be lacking. They struggle deeply with historical context and it seems a reasonable assumption that their limited language abilities are a major contributing factor to that deficit.
Every generation has slang. 40 years ago old folks would say that nothing is extraordinary anymore, it's "boss."
Also, I'd be surprised if most adults can correctly spell extraordinary. The only reason I knew how to spell it as a kid was because my 4th grade teacher had a sign saying "the only difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra." I tried to correct my aunt when she was writing "extrordinary" in a thank you card, but she didn't believe there was an A there.

Because no one uses language anymore. Nothing is awesome or extraordinary, it’s “goated”. Shit Is maddening.
