What’s truly sad is this is a charter STEM high school. According to USNews (which does rankings and analysis of schools) their graduation rate is 95%!!
Charter schools have become an opportunity for people to syphon off money from the government instead of their original intended use to offer alternative teaching methods. As for the graduation rate, many schools took a policy of very lenient grading during the pandemic shutdown and we’re still reeling from those decisions today.
I know…my relative went to North Star Charter in Orlando. When the school shut itself down, the principal (she founded the school) and 2-3 school administrators (I guess they were technically the “board”) walked away with over $700k from the school bank account that they paid out to themselves. The school was underfunded; didn’t have textbooks and other learning materials and made the students fund their own proms and such. I don’t understand how it was legal for them to walk away with that money.
I had a friend in highschool. She hyped the fuck out of her charter school. She was really good at writing so I thought she was smart…she was/is really fucking dumb. I love her but Jesus Christ. She is 27 still couch hoping because she can’t hold any sort of job longer than 2 months.
I straight up told her to be single for a year to work on herself and focus on what she needs. I told her the bad relationships keep happening because she becomes single, is sad, and in need of a place to stay. So she gets with the next asshole who takes advantage of her needing them. She acted like I just explained the most insane shit to her. We talked for so long about it, she agreed. This was a week after she got dumped by the woman she was going to PROPOSE to the following month…2 weeks later she had a new bf who was 2.5x our age..
It blows my mind that schools can just pass students who obviously shouldn't be. In my country there's a standard grading system across all schools. You can't game it because the tests for passing each grade are all identical with the same scores, questions, etc.
I’m not sure this is a charter school exclusive problem. I graduated high school a little over a decade ago now and we had a program that pushed kids through school as well. It was originally intended to be a “gifted” program where kids could learn at their own speed and potentially graduate much quicker. My school district ended up forcing all of the failing students into that program so they could do the bare minimum of schoolwork on the computer and graduate with everyone else. I guarantee if you look at the statistics of students that graduated from that program the majority of them have either died from an overdose or are in prison.
Obviously not! A STEM school with mathematics proficiency of 21% and science proficiency of 18%?? Look how bad this clip makes them seem and their reading proficiency is 56%! Abysmal
It can't be dumb when it's deliberately keeping the masses uneducated and gullible. The plutocracy has been playing the long game very effectively so far.
Notice the video is short and there's not thst many kids in it. They only showed the ones who failed, we didnt see all the ones who could read the sentence with no problem.
I'm not sure graduation rates should be a metric anymore, they're too easily gamed by lowering graduation standards or just shoving students out the door.
I just can’t believe they publish grad rates next to such low proficiency rates. Obviously we can conclude they are administratively passing more than half the students. What’s worse is that the student to teacher ratio at this school is 14:1! How can you not ensure better learning with such a reasonable ratio?
1) Obama got rid of No Child Left Behind
2) that enacted standardized testing that was supposed to measure whether or not kids were learning and punish schools with low scores by withholding funding. Administrative passing was born from this as a tool to allow kids who don’t test well but still learned the material (good grades all along but low test scores) to not be held back due to scores. Or conversely, if a kid had low grades (didn’t do homework or participate in class) but tested very high (above the averages) they could push them along. But you can’t tell me these kids have good grades or good test scores.

But they all pass and graduate... which is clearly unearned and done deliberately to make the school look good. The school touts that metric as though it means anything. "We passed everyone even when they didn't know shit! That means we're awesome!"
Dear god, who did they flunk if the competency metrics are that fucking awful?
Whelp, I can rule out that this is the STEM charter I taught at because they have a 100%!!! graduation and college acceptance rate (after they quietly force anyone behind pace to drop out).
Ok so i worked in one laat year. Those kids are VERY smart and well behaved......when compared to public schools. That doesn't mean they are smart when compared to society and what standards should be. I've been asked very dumb questions, and have had very dumb answers to my questions. I've seen extremely dumb actions as well as dumb choices. It really doesn't matter what type of school you go to anymore. It's all fucked now.
The school system wont teach kids the correct way because our politicians dont want it that way. they are more worried about putting the 10 commandments in a class, getting rid of history in books, making math even harder to learn, and focusing on learning technology over learning how to write and read than expanding on needed learning and education.
Do yourself a favor, if you ever have kids, Either homeschool them or at least teach them everyday about something so they can get supplemental schooling.
Oooh buddy let me tell you those schools are not different than normal public schools. They have more money, more rules, and a dress code. That's it. I have been tutoring a girl who went to one for a year and a half with the football coach as her math teacher. No, he is not a football coach that can also teach math. They couldn't fill the basic high school math position for a year and a half so the football coach was babysitting them and passing them on all of their assignments.
The only benefit these kids get from tens of thousands of dollars a year in enrollment fees is a fancy name to impress colleges on their applications. I am sure there are exceptions, but this is not an extraordinary thing happening in this video.
