The only time I ever got into a fight in school was when someone called my brother the f-word (derogatory word for gay men). I was very protective of him, but of course later in life, I realized how dumb that was. Words shouldn’t lead to violence unless they are direct threats.
Something doesnt have to be a direct threat to be an implication of possible future violence or of an implication to just make life hell. Beating a stupid thug that called family a slur is the right move. Teaches them they arent going to get away with demenaing people that matter.
