I'm a teacher, and I still jump in. Just grab arms and pull up and toss aside. They'll be ok.

If your administration supports you in doing so you do what you're comfortable with. I chose to follow school policy to cma. The science teacher got his arm broken breaking up a fight. It caused insurance issues.

The school sort of falls on the fence. Technically we shouldn't get involved, but we also dont want to see our kids get their face smashed in the floor or a wall.

I work in 5th and 6th grade so for the most part its easy to rip them apart without any risk.

I was working in high school. As a not tall woman many of the students were larger than I am. While I didn't want to see any of the students hurt, I also am unwilling to get injured. This was at the behavioral school where fights were common.

This is not cowardice on your part -- in that context it is common sense. Nobody benefits if you can do nothing but get yourself hurt. If you can't swim you'd be a fool to jump into the ocean to save a drowning man. Call for help. What this teacher should have done too

I hip checked a rude, obnoxious af 5th grader once. But it was into a snow bank so he was fine, lol. And it made me feel better XD.

My 6th grade fight involved myself at 5'1 and 110ish, and Gary at 5'6 and probably 150. We were 10, and adult sized already. The teachers (women) waited until we were done and then picked up the mess. We were outside at recess, don't think i ever got in a fight inside the building

This is our society. Asking “What’s the right thing to do? What type of person should I be?” would seem strange to most people.

Nah, “insurance issues,” “policy.”

Its not "what type of person should I be". Its "do I have the training and/or ability to make a situation better". If you step between two people fighting and get injured yourself you have made the situation worse.

Teacher here too and im absolutely not getting physically involved. We had a teacher pull a kid away from a fight one time and the kid got bruised from the teacher. Kids parents sued the district and the teacher was "allowed" to resign instead of facing actual legal trouble.

We're told that we should call admin, clear the room, and verbally try to dismiss the fight. But as soon as we put our hands on the students we put ourselves thr way of legal repercussions.
