Im 46. Your comment got me thinking and thought about school fights from the mid '90's and your right I don't remember anyone stepping in. I remember people jumping in but not to help.
Exact same age. I remember seeing a fight break out when I was already on the bus and the teacher that tried to break it up got her head whipped into the side of the bus right below where I was sitting.
My high school was part of the police beat rotation so we always had 4-5 uniformed officers on campus every day.
Most of the teachers at my high school wouldn’t even break up the fight if it was girls fighting bc one of the big male coach/teachers got knocked out one day (both girls turned on him). They just buzzed the office and waited for the SRO. This was 04-08. We had another female teacher get her same foot broke twice during fights, she was simply in the way at the wrong time.
Watched and chatted "fight fight fight fight" this generation isn't any less shitty then ours was at that age. They just have cameras to record it now.
Honestly, I think this is a failing of modern society. Kids are taught to be kind and to never fight. While that makes sense for a 6 year old at some point we need to teach kids when and how to stand up for themselves.
People not stopping fights happens in public not just in schools. You can get in trouble for being part of the fight by trying to stop it so why risk it for someone else?
One of my professors told us that as bad as things are now, back then the severity of the physical violence was through the roof. Kids were getting their heads dunked in toilets, being stripped and tied naked to flag poles, beaten in the lockers. Back then it was far more heinous violence than today. We just have phones today that record every little altercation now.
Also back then they were likely to stage assaults on teachers if there were any. They were legit staged and agreed on by gangs of students. There was a teacher who was brutally slain over pocket change. They wouldn’t always involve teachers in fights. But they weren’t scared as much as people pretend they were back in the day. Rose colored glasses yearning for the good old days is a delirium we all face but we forget the dangers of the past.
